13 years of telescope observations create the most detailed 2D view of the universe yet

The universe just got a stunning new portrait, and its sheer scale is almost impossible to comprehend. After more than a decade of observations and hundreds of thousands of telescope exposures, astronomers have assembled a colossal 5.6-trillion-pixel map covering roughly three-quarters of the sky and nearly 4 billion cosmic objects. But this isn’t simply a spectacular picture — the massive dataset could reshape how scientists explore the cosmos, uncover rare objects and study how galaxies evolve. The making of a cosmic masterpiece

To capture three-quarters of the visible night sky, you need more than just a powerful telescope — you need time, patience, and a staggering amount of data.

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Legacy Imaging Surveys team spent 13 years gathering over 263,000 individual exposures across visible and near-infrared wavelengths. Using advanced instruments, the team meticulously stitched those snapshots together into a single, breathtaking digital canvas.

The result? A 5.6-trillion-pixel map detailing nearly 4 billion celestial objects, from neighboring stars in our own Milky Way to sprawling galaxies billions of light-years away. Published by the National Science Foundation’s NOIRLab, the interactive survey gives both professional researchers and casual stargazers an unprecedented view of our galactic neighborhood.

“It’s part of the fabric of astronomy research now,” said David Schlegel, co-lead of the Legacy Surveys and a scientist at the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. “When you’re working with astronomical objects today, you often start by pulling up the Legacy Imaging Viewer to see what you’re looking at.”

From a flat image to a 3D blueprint

While a 5.6-trillion-pixel panorama is an incredible milestone, it was originally built to serve a deeper purpose: acting as a high-tech treasure map for a much larger cosmic mission.

In 2021, astronomers mounted the DESI onto the Nicholas U. Mayall 4-meter Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. To study the universe, DESI needed to know precisely where to target its thousands of robotic optical fibers. The 2D map served as the essential coordinate guide

By targeting galaxies identified in the 2D survey, DESI measures their “redshift” — the degree to which their light has been stretched as the universe expands. Calculating these light stretches allows scientists to determine how far away galaxies are, transforming flat, two-dimensional images into a rich, three-dimensional model of the universe.

Already, DESI’s 3D mapping efforts have far exceeded expectations:

  • 47 million targets: As of April 2026, DESI has mapped tens of millions of galaxies and quasars, creating the largest high-resolution 3D map in history.
  • An evolving universe: Early 3D findings have hinted that dark energy — the elusive force accelerating cosmic expansion — might actually change over time, challenging long-held assumptions in physics.

A map designed for discoveries beyond DESI

The new Legacy Imaging Surveys release is expected to have a life far beyond the DESI project itself. Earlier versions of the dataset have already been cited in more than 1,800 scientific papers, underscoring the value of large-scale sky surveys to researchers.

The latest map could further help astronomers identify rare and unusual objects, investigate how galaxies form and change over time, and search for previously overlooked cosmic phenomena. Its enormous collection of images could also be useful for training artificial intelligence systems, particularly as next-generation observatories begin producing even larger volumes of astronomical data.

An atlas for all humanity

Beyond its technical achievements and scientific utility, the new cosmic map represents a deeply human milestone: making the grandest scales of the universe accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

“Explorations of our universe always start with images of the night sky. The DESI Imaging Legacy Surveys are just one step in this venerable human tradition,” noted Arjun Dey, co-lead of the surveys and an astronomer at NSF NOIRLab. “For our team, these data are fundamental to the investigation of the expansion history of the universe and the formation of our galaxy. But the skies belong to everyone, and this survey gives everyone the chance to marvel at their wonders.”
