Disney has made it clear that The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian season 3 are not one and the same.
When the post-credits scene of The Mandalorian season 2 finale revealed that The Book of Boba Fett would be arriving on Disney+ in December 2021, around the same time as The Mandalorian season 3, a lot of fans were convinced that the two projects are the same. But on Monday morning, Disney set the record the straight by announcing that The Book of Boba Fett is different from The Mandalorian season 3 and is actually a new series of its own.
In a tweet, Disney called The Book of Boba Fett a “new original series,” which will star Temuera Morrison as the titular bounty hunter, and Ming-Na Wen as his loyal mercenary ally, Fennec Shand. Executive produced by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Robert Rodriguez, the new Star Wars series will be set within the timeline established by The Mandalorian.

In an interview with Good Morning America on Monday, Favreau confirmed that The Book of Boba Fett is “actually separate” from The Mandalorian Season 3, noting that the latter will go into production “with the main character we know and love (Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin)” after the production on the former ― which has already started ― wrapped up.
Favreau added that The Book of Boba Fett was held back from the many other series announcements made at Disney Investor Day earlier this month because they “didn’t want to spoil the surprise.”
Aside from The Book of Boba Fett, other The Mandalorian spinoffs coming to Disney+ are Ahsoka and Rangers of the New Republic. As announced at Disney Investor Day, all these new series will “culminate in a climactic story event.”
Plot details about The Book of Boba Fett are being kept under wraps but in the post-credits scene of The Mandalorian season 2 finale, Boba and Fennec Shand take over what was once Jabba’s palace, now occupied by his former majordomo Bib Fortuna. The duo dispatch everyone pretty quickly, and then Boba takes a comfortable and commanding seat on Jabba’s throne.
As mentioned above, The Book of Boba Fett will premiere on Disney+ in December 2021, with The Mandalorian season 3 expected to debut right after the former’s freshman run.
