What is Playmobil Star Trek Klingon Bird-of-Prey?

Unveiled on Star Trek Day on September 8th, the Playmobil Star Trek Klingon Bird-of-Prey is a replica of Commander Kruge’s Klingon Bird-of-Prey that was featured in the 1984 film Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

The bridge of Playmobil’s Klingon Bird-of-Prey has a removable roof and has room for two figures. The wings on both sides of the warship can be angled into three different positions: for attack, flight mode, and landing, with functioning cannons on the side.

The mini replica of the ship also features lights and original sound effects from the TV series and movies, providing an authentic Star Trek feeling. The power supply for the lighting is provided by a battery or via a USB port.

To recreate scenes from Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Playmobil’s Klingon Bird-of-Prey includes figures of Klingon Commander Kruge, Klingon Maltz, Klingon Torg, Klingon Gunner, Admiral James T. Kirk, and Spock.

Klingon Bird-of-Prey in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

In the Leonard Nimoy-directed movie, Kruge ― using a Klingon Bird-of-Prey ― conducted a mission to uncover the secrets of Project Genesis, a classified scientific research project within the Federation whose goal was to develop a process whereby uninhabitable planets could be made suitable for humanoid life through a subatomic transformation.

After obtaining the information, Kruge’s ship destroyed the freighter Merchantman and the starship USS Grissom, and later faced off against the USS Enterprise in orbit of the Genesis Planet. The majority of Kruge’s crew was killed when Kirk manipulated them into boarding the Enterprise, which was subsequently destroyed via self-destruct.

After the death of Kruge on the surface of the Genesis Planet, Kirk and his crew commandeered the Klingon Bird-of-Prey and used it to transport Spock, whose body had been regenerated by the Genesis wave, to Mount Seleya on Vulcan, where his Katra was successfully reunited with his body.

Kruge’s Klingon Bird-of-Prey was later renamed HMS Bounty. The name was originally suggested by Dr. Leonard McCoy as an ironic joke in reference to the famous sea-going vessel of the same name which was taken over by mutineers in the 18th century.

After three months, during which the HMS Bounty underwent repairs, Kirk and his crew used the ship to return to Earth.
