Snowpiercer’s 10-episode sophomore run just ended last week, and if you’re wondering whether there’s going to be another season of the post-apocalyptic dystopian thriller, then we’re glad to inform you that a third season of the TNT and Netflix series is now in production.
One week before the show’s season 2 premiere last January, the network announced that it had renewed Snowpiercer for season 3. The announcement didn’t mention the exact episode order for the new season, but since the first two seasons of the series have 10 episodes each, it’s likely that the third season will also have 10 episodes.
When will Snowpiercer season 3 premiere?
In an interview with Collider, actress Mickey Sumner, who plays brakeman turned train detective Bess Till in the show, revealed that filming for season 3 started last March. Though the new season has no release date yet, it will probably premiere sometime in 2022. But since TV productions can be suspended at any time due to the ongoing threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s a possibility that season 3 will be released later than expected.
Who will be in Snowpiercer season 3?
Main cast members Summer, Daveed Diggs (Andre Layton), Alison Wright (Ruth Wardell), Katie McGuinness (Josie Wellstead), Sam Otto (John “Oz” Osweiller), Sheila Vand (Zarah Ferami), Mike O’Malley (Sam Roche), Annalise Basso (LJ Folger), Steven Ogg (Pike), Rowan Blanchard (Alexandra “Alex” Cavil), and Sean Bean (Mr. Wilford) are all expected to come back for season 3.
And even though it’s not clear whether Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly) is still alive after the events of the season 2 finale, executive producer Becky Clements confirmed to TVLine that Connelly will return for season 3.
Fans will also meet a new character named Asha (Archie Panjabi) in the third season. While details about her are being kept under wraps, Clements said that the addition of the character to the show will make season 3 “super-exciting.”
What will happen in Snowpiercer season 3?
Melanie’s fate is expected to be revealed early in the new season. One of the most popular fan theories suggests that Melanie was rescued by a group of survivors in the mountains and brought her back to their colony to recover. On the other hand, it’s also possible that Melanie will only appear in flashback scenes, which will show the last few moments leading to her potential death.
Meanwhile, Clements confirmed to TVLine that the weather will continue to play a huge role in season 3. “It is definitely a new character,” the executive producer said of the planet’s ever-problematic weather. “Climate change is something that [fellow executive producer] Graeme [Manson] is always discussing, and it’s such a strong topic that we all have very strong feelings about.” Clements added that season 3 will “keep reminding people that we have to take care of our Earth, and how fragile a moment we are in.”
And with the outwitted and already-psychotic Wilford now in charge of the titular train, Clements said that viewers can expect a couple of people to rein him in, and one of those individuals could be Ruth.
Lastly, Clements revealed that there’s going to be “some chasing” between the Snowpiercer and the Big Alice.
