If you haven’t been paying attention, Segway builds scooters, and their latest ZT3 Pro takes electric scooters to a whole new level of adventure.
To that effect, the Segway ZT3 Pro represents an exhilarating and impressive entry into the world of electric scooters. Designed for power, durability, and rugged terrain, this scooter delivers a comfortable and exciting ride with advanced tech features and a bold, imposing design.
The ZT3 Pro can reach speeds of almost 25 mph and has a battery that will last over 43 miles on a single charge. It comes with a connected app that unlocks a variety of features, like Apple’s Find My and AirLock to unlock the scooter with your phone.
Segway’s ZT3 Pro is actually our first foray into rugged electric scooters, and while we appreciate how advanced and capable it is, we did find a few caveats.
Key Features
Coming from a brand with years of expertise in the market, Segway’s reputation for innovation and safety enhances the ZT3 Pro’s appeal, especially with such a large battery at its core. That said, the Segway ZT3 Pro is packed with advanced features that further set it apart in the electric scooter market.
To start, the ZT3 Pro delivers impressive performance metrics with a maximum speed of 24.9 mph. It features speed modes with configurable top speeds and acceleration options. Its substantial 43.5-mile maximum range ensures riders can complete long-distance rides without worrying about frequent recharging stops. The electric scooter’s powerful 1600W Maximum Power motor provides robust performance for challenging terrains and high speeds.
Safety and comfort are paramount in the ZT3 Pro’s design. The scooter incorporates a sophisticated Traction Control System that enhances grip and stability across various surfaces, while the dual suspension system smooths out bumps for a more comfortable ride. The electric scooter’s Stability Enhancement system further improves balance and control, especially at higher speeds.
The ZT3 Pro’s ruggedness and technological integration stand out with its 11-inch off-road tubeless tires, designed for durability and performance on uneven terrain. Modern connectivity features include Apple integration with Find My and AirLock capabilities, allowing for seamless integration with Apple’s network for convenient locking and locating.
The Good
The ZT3 Pro’s off-roading ruggedness means it can handle any terrain you’d encounter around town, including steep hills, grassy areas, and dirt roads. This versatility makes it not just an off-road champion, but also a practical choice for urban explorers who need a scooter that can adapt to various terrains.
The ZT3 Pro offers a lot of power and durability, which is nice to have in almost any situation. Its rugged design is visually striking and built to withstand the demands of off-road adventures. The suspension system provides a smoother ride than expected, even on bumpy terrain. At full throttle, the scooter’s acceleration is both thrilling and responsive.
As a beginner, the top speed took a few rides to get comfortable with—it can be scary at first. There’s a clear digital speedometer right in front of you for clocking your speed—it takes some practice and comfort to look down at it while driving.

The technology integration is another highlight. Apple’s auto-lock feature simplifies security, allowing riders to lock the scooter without worrying about keys or passcodes. You can adjust the proximity you need to be from the scooter before unlocking. If you don’t have this AirLock feature enabled, there’s a passcode option that turns the scooter’s buttons into a key.
The Segway-Ninebot app helps you learn the various capabilities and features while offering customization and control. You can configure charging schedules, change what the buttons do, and adjust the ride.
We were happy with how easy and natural the kickstand was to use, making quick stops hassle-free. Additionally, the braking handles work the same as a bicycle, and you won’t even need it much since the scooter slows as you ease off the throttle. The slow-down is configurable too, as it’s used to recharge the battery. Even as a beginner, it only took a few rides to feel like a pro.
The Not-So-Good
Despite its impressive features, the ZT3 Pro is not without its drawbacks. Its weight is a significant limitation. While the build quality is exceptional, the scooter’s heft makes it difficult to carry up or down stairs, load into a car, or transport in situations requiring lifting. It weighs 65 lbs, and even when folded the shape makes it difficult and awkward to lift. Portability is further hindered by the manufacturer’s recommendation against rolling it upstairs.
Safety features are a mixed bag too. While the turn signals and bright lights are welcome additions, the signals’ usability feels unnatural and takes practice finding the arrow buttons while driving. The lack of rearview mirrors or additional stabilizing safety options detracts from confidence during high-speed rides. At top speed, you instantly realize a small accident could result in a serious injury, so take all the appropriate safety precautions and make sure you’re wearing protective gear.
The app is great for learning the scooter’s features, but the one thing it was missing was a basic tutorial on how to use the scooter. It wasn’t obvious to me that it requires a rolling start before the throttle can be used—this took a bit of trial-and-error. After digging in the app I found the rolling start feature can be turned off or adjusted.
Another important area for improvement is storage. The scooter lacks built-in storage solutions, leaving riders reliant on backpacks for carrying items. This limitation can make errands or grocery runs less convenient, particularly when both hands are needed for stabilization and braking. It seems like the scooter would support aftermarket storage accessories, or Segway brand accessories if and when they make them.
While we never ran into any battery limitations in our small town, it’s worth noting that the 43-mile range becomes an 18-mile range when driving at the top speed. This is still a lot, but it depends on what you have planned. A full charge with the included fast charger takes about 4-5 hours.
Final Thoughts
The Segway ZT3 Pro is a powerhouse scooter designed for riders who prioritize performance, durability, and advanced features. Its rugged build, gorgeous design, thrilling acceleration, and seamless tech integration make it a standout in its category.
Key features like the 24.9 mph top speed, a 43.5-mile range, built-in lighting, and a traction control system highlight its capability for both urban and off-road use. However, its hefty weight, limited portability, and lack of storage mean it may not be best suited for those using it in certain urban environments.
For riders ready to embrace its strengths and navigate its quirks, the ZT3 Pro offers a truly exciting ride. While not perfect, it’s a bold choice for adventurers and urban explorers alike. The eKickScooter ZT3 Pro is currently available from Segway.com for $999.99.
