There’s still hope for a Magnum P.I. season 5.
Will there be a season 5 of Magnum P.I. 2022?
Earlier this month, CBS cancelled Magnum P.I. after four seasons, but a new report by TVLine suggests that the action drama may find a second life in another network or a streaming service. When a fan asked if another station will pick up the Jay Hernandez-led series, the news outlet’s Matt Webb Mitovich revealed that Magnum P.I. season 5 is being pitched to other networks.
“I cannot tell you that another station will ‘save’ Magnum — though I am now hearing that lead producer Universal TV is trying to shop it around,” Mitovich replied to the fan.
Why did Magnum P.I. get cancelled?
According to Deadline, Magnum P.I.’s cancellation was a business decision after CBS and Universal TV could not come to an agreement on the license fee, as lower overall linear ratings have been pushing down on what networks are willing to spend on shows. Apparently, this problem is most pronounced when a series is produced by an outside studio as is the case with Magnum P.I.
Deadline added that the strength of the network’s drama pilots for the 2022-23 TV season likely contributed to the decision to cancel Magnum P.I. Earlier this month, CBS handed series orders to three of its five drama pilots: Max Thieriot’s Fire Country; East New York, headlined by Amanda Warren and Jimmy Smits; and So Help Me Todd, starring Marcia Gay Harden and Skylar Astin.
What was Magnum P.I. about?
A reboot of the 1980s drama of the same name, Magnum P.I. followed Thomas Magnum (Hernandez), a private investigator and former Navy SEAL, who solved crimes in the state, after returning home from Afghanistan and repurposing his military skills. Developed by Peter M. Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim, the reboot also starred Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Tim Kang, and Amy Hill.
The show’s fourth and final season ended its run last May 6th.
