What will season 2 of Russian Doll be about?

According to the description from Netflix, Russian Doll season 2 will continue to explore existential thematics through an often humorous and sci-fi lens. Set four years after Nadia (Lyonne) and Alan (Charlie Barnett) escaped mortality’s time loop together, the two discover a fate even worse than endless death as they delve deeper into their pasts through an unexpected time portal located in one of Manhattan’s most notorious locations.

At first, Nadia and Alan experience this as an ever-expanding, era-spanning, intergenerational adventure, but they soon discover this extraordinary event might be more than they bargained for and, together, must search for a way out.

In February, Lyonne teased that Russian Doll season 2 will be just as unpredictable as the show’s freshman run.

“It’s definitely a wild ride. It is deep and deeply off-the-wall,” Lyonne said of the show’s upcoming season in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I genuinely think the joy of the game is to watch it with fresh eyes as much as you can in order to be taken by the story… We all pushed ourselves to the limit of what we thought we could make happen visually and through the storytelling.”

Citing one of her childhood favorites, The Neverending Story, as an example, Lyonne said that watching season 2 of Russian Doll is like “saddling up with a book in the attic and letting that world take you away on a journey.”

Who will be in season 2 of Russian Doll?

In addition to Lyonne and Barnett, other main cast members from season 1 are expected to return for season 2. This includes Greta Lee (Maxine), Yul Vasquez (John Reyes), and Elizabeth Ashley (Ruth Brenner).

Also joining the show for season 2 in undisclosed roles and capacity are series newcomers Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek), Carolyn Michelle Smith (Cherish the Day), Sharlto Copley (District 9), and Ephraim Sykes (Hamilton).
