If you’re a fan of The Midnight Gospel and are looking for a similar high-brow animated show to watch, Adult Swim has got you covered. Cartoon Network’s nighttime programming block is currently airing a visually stunning show with a level of emotional depth comparable to the Netflix series.

What should I watch if I like Midnight Gospel?

If you love The Midnight Gospel, you should watch Primal. While the former is in the realm of science fantasy and surrealism and the latter is more of an action thriller, both visually stunning shows are praised for the way they tackle deep and philosophical subjects.

What is Primal about?

Set in an anachronistic and fantastical prehistoric world, Primal tells the story of a caveman at the dawn of evolution who forms an unlikely friendship with an almost extinct dinosaur. Named Spear and Fang respectively, the Neanderthal and the Tyrannosaurus struggle to survive as they encounter the various dangerous fauna and people that live in their world.

Created by Genndy Tartakovsky, Primal is filled with suspense, heartbreak, excitement, love, and fear. With almost no dialogue, the series is a painting come to life, relying solely on music and graphic imagery to tell the story of two unlikely allies as they navigate through a treacherous world.

What is The Midnight Gospel about?

Created by Pendleton Ward and Duncan Trussell, The Midnight Gospel revolves around Clancy Gilroy (Trussell), a spacecaster who lives on the Chromatic Ribbon, a membranous, tape-like planet situated in the middle of a colorful void where simulation farmers use powerful bio-organic computers to simulate a variety of universes from which they harvest natural resources and new technology.

Each episode follows Clancy as he travels through planets within the simulator, with the beings inhabiting these worlds as the guests he interviews for his spacecast. These interviews are based on actual interviews, with real audio derived from Trussell’s real-life podcast, The Duncan Trussell Family Hour. The episodes usually end with an apocalyptic event from which Clancy barely manages to escape.

Is Primal getting a season 2?

Yes. Primal does have a season 2. The show’s 10-episode sophomore run actually premiered on Adult Swim in July 2022 and is currently ongoing. The series has yet to be renewed for a season 3.

Has Midnight Gospel been cancelled?

In response to a tweet by a fan asking if there are plans for more episodes of The Midnight Gospel, series co-creator and star Duncan Trussell revealed that the show had been cancelled by Netflix after just one season.

In a follow-up tweet, Trussell shared that the series has “one more season” in his mind but “the sentient glass ‘deciding’ cube they keep in their catacombs vibrated ‘No more.’  And it’s hard to argue with a cube.”

When one fan asked if it’s possible for the show to move to another streaming service, Trussell shut any hope of a revival down by pointing out that Netflix owns the rights to the show.

Despite the series’ cancellation, Trussell made it clear that he’s grateful for Netflix for helping the series become a reality. “PS I’m so lucky that the folks at @netflix rolled the dice and let us make such a strange show,” he tweeted. “They were supremely supportive all the way through and I’ll love them forever for it.”

Trussell didn’t offer an explanation for the show’s cancellation, but it’s worth noting that the series didn’t make it to the streamer’s overall top 10 when it debuted. According to FlixPatrol, The Midnight Gospel failed to reach the platform’s top 10 in the U.S. and only performed best in regions like Russia, Ukraine, and Bulgaria.

Netflix memorably launched the series on 4/20 of 2020 in an attempt to promote it to the stoner demographic. But like most Netflix cancellations, it’s safe to assume that renewing the animated series for another season would not be cost-effective for the company.
