In line with the celebration of National Dog Day on August 26th, pet insurance company Trupanion has released the top 10 dog names for 2020 based on its database of nearly 530,000 insured pets.
The rankings are as follows:
- Luna
- Charlie
- Bella
- Bailey
- Cooper
- Daisy
- Lucy
- Milo
- Max
- Coco
Luna ― the top dog name in 2019 ― remains on the first spot this year, followed by Charlie and Bella, which switched places from last year’s rankings. Bailey is on the fourth spot just like last year, followed by Cooper and Daisy, which both climbed up in the rankings. Last year, Cooper was on the sixth spot, while Daisy was on the eighth place.
From the fifth place in 2019, Lucy fell to the seventh spot this year, followed by newcomer Milo. Max also fell down the rankings. The 2019 seventh placer is now on the ninth spot, followed by another newcomer Coco. 2019’s ninth and tenth placers, Bear and Oliver, respectively, didn’t make it to the top 10 this year.
Aside from the top 10 dog names for 2020, Trupanion also released a list of the most unique dog names for the year. Check them out below:

- Beatrix Hollywoof (Yorkshire Terrier)
Along with the release of the two fun rankings, Trupanion also reminded people that having a pet is believed to reduce stress and improve overall health and well-being. “So take the time and celebrate your dog (or other favorite pet) and be thankful for all the goodness they bring into your life,” Trupanion wrote in a press release.
