Ferrell joins previously announced cast members Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad) and Ryan Gosling (La La Land), who will play Barbie and Ken, respectively. The star-studded acting ensemble also includes America Ferrera (Superstore), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Kate McKinnon (Ghostbusters), Ariana Greenblatt (Avengers: Infinity War), Alexandra Shipp (X-Men: Apocalypse), and Emma Mackey (Sex Education).

Plot details for the movie are still unknown, but since it is directed and co-wrote by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), fans can expect an unusual take on the story of the popular doll character. Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story) co-wrote the film with Gerwig.

Meanwhile, aside from playing the titular character, Robbie is also producing the film under her LuckyChap Entertainment production banner along with LuckyChap’s Tom Ackerley. Principal photography on the film started in March 2022 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K. Though the movie doesn’t have an exact release date yet, the plan is to have its theatrical release sometime in 2023.
