Sci-fi fans everywhere have spent years crossing their fingers, waiting for a grand return to the iconic portal universe that first kicked off with the 1994 feature film starring James Spader and Kurt Russell. That original cinematic hit spawned massive television expansions like Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, creating a deeply loyal fanbase that has been hungry for more cosmic adventures ever since.
Now, exciting news is swirling that a major revival is officially back on track, sparking hope that the iconic gate will soon spin up once again with some heavy-hitting creative talent at the helm.
Stepping through a brand-new portal with MCU talent
Reports reveal that WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer is stepping in to develop a brand-new Stargate series under her overall deal at Amazon MGM Studios. Bringing in Schaeffer signals a massive win for sci-fi fans who want a fresh spin on the mythology.
Schaeffer has a proven track record for character-driven storytelling, intricate mysteries and making complex fictional universes easily accessible to new and old viewers alike.
Why the latest revival plans hit a major roadblock
As previously reported on GEEKSPIN, production hit a snag and was canceled after Amazon decided not to move forward with the series. The project had received a series order from Amazon back in November 2025 with Martin Gero attached as writer, showrunner and executive producer.
According to an insider, Amazon executives were concerned that Gero’s version would not appeal broadly to viewers outside the existing Stargate fanbase, prompting the change of mind. Fortunately, Amazon isn’t letting the franchise gather dust in the Milky Way.
Introducing Stargate’s star team
As mentioned above, Schaeffer is something of a cosmic veteran when it comes to making sci-fi interstellar movies and series. Her contribution to WandaVision made the series a huge success and it went on to earn 23 Primetime Emmy nominations as well as numerous other accolades.
However, Schaeffer is not working alone on this project. According to sources, a writer’s room is expected to be created in the near future. Joining Schaeffer are Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell, who will serve as the project’s executive producers.
What to expect
With the ensemble of show runners and producers listed above, it is safe to say the next Stargate iteration could very well be a massive success with fans. The new show aims to bridge the gap between longtime franchise loyalists and an entirely new generation of viewers discovering the gate for the very first time.
Even though Schaeffer and Amazon are keeping tight-lipped, official details may drop soon. And while we wait, we can all agree that the future of the franchise is looking brighter than a ZPM powering up.
