After years of fans clamoring for a fresh return to the Stargate universe, the long-gestating revival has hit a sudden wall.
Amazon is reportedly not moving forward with its new Stargate series.
The show received a series order from Amazon in November 2025 with Martin Gero attached as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. As a Stargate veteran, Gero previously wrote or contributed to more than 40 episodes across the franchise, including multiple episodes of both Stargate SG-1 (1997-2007) and Stargate Atlantis (2004-2009) earlier in his career.
Why the project stalled and what’s ahead
According to a person familiar with the decision, Amazon executives were worried that Gero’s version of the show wouldn’t appeal to many people outside the existing Stargate fanbase.
The tech giant seems committed to the franchise, though. The company has been keen to develop new projects since acquiring MGM Studios in 2022 and is still exploring other ways to keep the franchise going despite cancelling Gero’s series.
It’s worth noting that Gero is staying with Amazon MGM Studios under an overall deal with the company and will continue to work on other projects there.
No plot details for Gero’s version of the show were ever made public. The project featured a fairly large producing team that included Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures, along with Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who co-wrote and directed the original 1994 film. Longtime franchise contributors Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi served as consulting producers.
Stargate began as a 1994 feature film starring James Spader (as Daniel Jackson) and Kurt Russell (as Jack O’Neil). It later spawned the long-running Stargate SG-1, which aired for ten seasons, and Stargate Atlantis, which ran for five seasons.
There have also been a couple of direct-to-video movies and a few other shows over the years, the most recent being the 2018 web series prequel Stargate Origins (2018).
While Gero’s version won’t be seeing the light of day, it’s safe to assume that Amazon’s continued interest suggests the iconic sci-fi saga may yet return in another form.
