While almond milk still holds the crown for the most popular plant-based milk in the market, a brand-new variety of non-dairy milk could soon give it a run for its money.

Táche, the first true pistachio milk in the United States, officially launched last week. Though a newcomer, the brand aims to make a splash in the $21.4 billion plant-based milk market with its two variants of pistachio milk: the Táche Original Blend and the Táche Unsweetened Original Blend.

The Táche Original Blend is described as “a little bit nutty and a little bit sweet,” while the Táche Unsweetened Original Blend has a “nutty flavor that’s light and refreshing.” While both variants are low in calories and carbs, the Táche Unsweetened Original Blend is the healthier option as it only has 50 calories, 3 grams of carbs, and 0 grams of added sugar per serving size of 240ml.

Made from pistachios that are sourced from fourth generation family farmers, Táche is understated enough to be an ideal companion for coffee, matcha, cocktails, and smoothies. It can also be used as an alternative ingredient for dairy milk in breakfast dishes and baked goods.

Unlike oat milk and other plant-based milk alternatives, pistachio milk doesn’t rely on the addition of vegetable oil to act as an emulsifier. Táche is made without any added oils, so its velvety, barista-friendly texture is 100% au naturale. This is noteworthy because drinking a single serving size of oat milk with canola oil is equivalent to ingesting about the same amount of oil used for frying a medium order of fries. Also, canola oil and other vegetable oils are highly processed and have been linked to several serious health issues.

Aside from being more nutritious than other plant-based milks, pistachio milk is also more environmentally friendly. For instance, compared to almond milk, the production of pistachio milk has smaller water footprint. According to a report by UNESCO’s Institute for Water Education, pistachios require significantly less water compared to almonds. The report found that almond trees water footprint is almost four times larger than that of pistachios trees (25.5 gallons/oz for pistachios versus 97.2 gallons/oz for almonds).

Both the Táche Original Blend and the Táche Unsweetened Original Blend are now available to purchase on the Táche website as well as at Zabar’s, Chillhouse, DIMES, and other specialty retailers, bakeries, and cafes. They are selling for $48 per six-pack of 32 oz multi-serve cartons.
