In honor of the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day, career website Zippia did some research to find out which U.S. states are the luckiest.
According to Zippia, luck could be broken into two broad categories: finances and health. For finances, Zippia examined three factors: number of lotto winners, median income, and unemployment rate. As for health, the website looked into the average life expectancy, car accident deaths per 100,000, and weather fatalities. After gathering all the data needed, all factors were evenly averaged together, resulting in the following ranking:
#1 Minnesota
Big Lotto Winners: 22
Life Expectancy: 81
Car Accident Deaths Per 100k: 7
With 22 big lotto winners and an impressive life expectancy of 81, Minnesota is the luckiest state in the entire U.S. The generally good job opportunities as well as the smaller than average chance of death by a car accident or extreme weather in the state also helped Minnesota secure the top spot.
#2 New Jersey
Big Lotto Winners: 33
Life Expectancy: 80
Car Accident Deaths Per 100k: 6
Though New Jersey has a bigger number of lotto winners than Minnesota, it only has a life expectancy of 80, making it the second luckiest U.S. state. The Garden State’s strong wages and low accident risks also contributed to its overall luck.
#3 New Hampshire
Big Lotto Winners: 12
Life Expectancy: 80
Car Accident Deaths Per 100k: 7
New Hampshire is the most Irish state, so it isn’t surprising that it made it to the top 3. Two factors that made the Granite State lucky are its low unemployment and high incomes.
#4 Massachusetts
Big Lotto Winners: 9
Life Expectancy: 81
Car Accident Deaths Per 100k: 5
With the lowest extreme weather and car accident fatalities nationwide, Massachusetts is the fourth luckiest state in the country.
#5 New York
Big Lotto Winners: 50
Life Expectancy: 81
Car Accident Deaths Per 100k: 5
New York has had a total of 50 Powerball and Jackpot winners, but its luck doesn’t stop there, as the Empire State is also noted for having low car accident risks.
#6 Utah
Big Lotto Winners: 0
Life Expectancy: 80
Car Accident Deaths Per 100k: 8
Despite having no lotteries, Utah still emerged as the sixth luckiest U.S. state, thanks in huge part to its low unemployment.
#7 Washington
Big Lotto Winners: 6
Life Expectancy: 80
Car Accident Deaths Per 100k: 7
Only 6.8 people for every 100,000 die in a car accident in Washington each year, which is way better than the national average of 12.
#8 Rhode Island
Big Lotto Winners: 9
Life Expectancy: 80
Car Accident Deaths Per 100k: 5
Rhode Island may be the smallest state by area, but it’s much luckier than some of the biggest states. In fact, no Rhode Islanders died of extreme weather in the year examined, according to the National Weather Service.
