The fate of New Amsterdam has been sealed.
Back in January 2020, NBC renewed the medical drama for seasons 3, 4, and 5. But on Monday, the network announced that it’s not bringing back the series for a season 6, making season 5 the show’s final chapter.
Why did New Amsterdam get canceled?
The reason for the decision to end New Amsterdam with season 5 is unclear, but the series has slipped in the ratings following a hot start during its freshman run that aired from 2018 to 2019. Though New Amsterdam is currently ranking below most established NBC dramas, it remains a decent performer, averaging a 1.13 rating in adults 18-49 and 7.2 million viewers in Live+7 and multi-platform viewing this TV season.
How many episodes will New Amsterdam season 5 have?
New Amsterdam season 5 will be its shortest, as it will only consist of 13 episodes. Both the show’s seasons 1 and 4 have 22 episodes each. Season 2 is composed of 18 episodes, while season 3 is 14 episodes long.
What will happen in New Amsterdam season 5?
Since New Amsterdam season 4 is ongoing, plot details about season 5 are being kept under wraps. But in the current season, Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold), who had left his position as medical director of New Amsterdam to be with Dr. Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) in the U.K., has come back to challenge Dr. Veronica Fuentes (Michelle Forbes), his bureaucratic successor who has been undoing the progressive changes Max had fought to implement on the hospital.
When will New Amsterdam season 4 return?
New Amsterdam resumed its fourth-season run with four new episodes in January before taking a month-long hiatus for the Winter Olympics. The series then aired one new episode on February 22nd before going on another break to give way for the State of the Union and Renée Zellwegger’s true-crime limited series The Thing About Pam.
New Amsterdam season 4 will continue on April 19th, with the season finale scheduled for May 24th.
