Two decades after the original Simpsons movie was released, Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie are finally heading back to the big screen. The long-awaited sequel is already shaping up to be one of the most buzzed-about animated films in years. And while the return of Springfield’s most famous family is reason enough to celebrate, one big question looms: what fresh chaos will throw the town — and its beloved residents — into an even bigger mess this time around? Here’s everything we know so far about the second installment in The Simpsons movie franchise.

The Simpsons Movie sequel gets a release date

Disney and 20th Century Studios have officially locked in July 23, 2027, as the theatrical release date for the long-awaited sequel to The Simpsons Movie. In a playful Instagram reveal, the studios posted a teaser showing Homer Simpson stretching toward a pink-frosted donut whose sprinkles form the number “2.” Across the image, the tagline “Homer’s coming back for seconds” arcs above him, while the date—07.23.27—sits in the bottom-left corner. The accompanying caption reads: “Woohoo! The Simpsons are coming to theaters with an all-new movie on July 23, 2027.”

The yet-to-be-titled The Simpsons movie won’t go unchallenged: Warner Bros.’ animated musical Bad Fairies is slated to open on the very same day, setting up an intriguing box office face-off.

What to expect from The Simpsons Movie sequel: Plot and cast

While the announcement of a second Simpsons film has been officially confirmed, plot details for the highly anticipated sequel remain tightly under wraps. Neither Disney nor the creative team behind the iconic series has released any information regarding the new movie’s storyline. This secrecy leaves fans to speculate on what new global calamity or family crisis will once again befall the citizens of Springfield.

The first film, The Simpsons Movie, which debuted in July 2007, was a massive success, earning over $536 million worldwide. The plot centered on an environmental catastrophe that resulted from Homer Simpson’s carelessness, leading to a massive, eco-unfriendly disaster. The Environmental Protection Agency, led by the ruthless Russ Cargill, responds by quarantining Springfield under an enormous glass dome, forcing the Simpson family to go on the run from an angry mob and the government. The original movie was praised for its sharp humor, emotional depth, and ability to expand the show’s format to the big screen without losing its core identity.

The core cast members who have voiced the beloved family for decades are expected to return for the sequel. This includes Dan Castellaneta as Homer, Grampa, Krusty, and more; Julie Kavner as Marge and Patty and Selma Bouvier; Nancy Cartwright as Bart and Maggie; and Yeardley Smith as Lisa. Additionally, fan-favorites like Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer are expected to reprise their numerous roles, including Moe Szyslak, Chief Wiggum, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, and Ned Flanders. As for guest stars, no names have been revealed, but the franchise has a long history of attracting high-profile celebrities. The first film notably featured Tom Hanks in a prominent role as a satirical version of himself, leaving fans to wonder which major celebrity will make a cameo in the new movie.

The origins of The Simpsons

The Simpsons first appeared as animated shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987, created by cartoonist Matt Groening, who developed the characters on the spot in James L. Brooks’ office. The series was produced by Gracie Films in association with 20th Television and developed further by James L. Brooks and Sam Simon, who, along with Groening, are credited as the show’s creators. It made its full-length debut on December 17, 1989, with the holiday special Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire.

Since then, the series has evolved into a cultural institution, renowned for its razor-sharp satire, unforgettable characters, and enduring legacy. Today, it stands as the longest-running scripted prime-time series in U.S. television history.

As of 2025, The Simpsons is airing its 37th season, which premiered on September 28, 2025. Earlier this year, Fox renewed the show through Season 40, ensuring new episodes will air through at least 2029.
