Samsung’s latest Galaxy S26 phone is here, and it comes with seven years of software support. The company announced the Galaxy S26 FE on August 27, positioning it as the more accessible member of the S26 family while still packing in camera upgrades, Galaxy AI, a big 120Hz display, and a battery designed to survive a full day without constantly hunting for a charger.
It also has ne UI 9 right out of the box, something none of the other S26 phones had at launch. So, beyond giving you another phone to obsess over for six months before the next shiny thing arrives, Samsung is making a pretty strong argument for keeping this one around.
Seven years is a long time in smartphone years
The biggest headline here is longevity. According to Samsung, the Galaxy S26 FE will receive seven generations of Android OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from its global launch.
The phone ships with Android 17 and One UI 9, so that buyers are not starting with an older version of Samsung’s software and waiting for an update to catch up.
The camera got some useful upgrades
The FE is not a camera afterthought either. The Galaxy S26 FE has a triple-camera setup with a 50MP wide camera, 12MP ultrawide, and 8MP telephoto, plus 3x optical zoom and up to 30x digital zoom. The front camera gets a bump to 12MP, while Samsung’s Nightography features are designed to improve low-light shots.
But one of the more interesting additions is My FanCam, which Samsung previously introduced on its newer foldables. The feature can automatically track a selected person and keep them centered as they move through a video. So instead of frantically trying to keep your friend in frame while they are running around at a concert, the phone can do some of the work for you.
Samsung is also bringing Super Steady with Horizontal Lock, which helps keep video level while you’re moving around.
AI is getting more useful and more nosy
The S26 FE also arrives with a collection of Galaxy AI features built into One UI 9. Samsung’s updated Now Brief can provide personalized information through customizable cards, including things like weather and wellness information. Users can also create their own cards using prompts.
In addition, there is Now Nudge, which suggests actions based on what’s happening on your screen. Samsung says it can now work with selected third-party apps and notifications, giving you shortcuts without making you go hunting through menus.
And Circle to Search gets an upgrade that lets you search for multiple objects in an image at once. There is also Photo Assist, which lets you edit images using natural-language prompts. Users can ask it to make changes, review the edits step by step, and undo them if the AI gets a little too creative.
The phone also includes access to Gemini Omni, with a six-month Google AI Pro trial for eligible users. The trial includes expanded AI features and 5TB of cloud storage, with the subscription priced at $19.99 per month after the trial unless canceled.
The hardware is still pretty serious
The Galaxy S26 FE has a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and brightness reaching 1,900 nits. Inside is Samsung’s Exynos 2500 3nm processor, paired with 8GB of RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of storage.
The battery is rated at 4,900mAh, with support for 45W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. Samsung says the phone can reach up to 65% charge in around 30 minutes with a 45W adapter. Keep in mind that the adapter is sold separately.
Because somehow, every phone eventually has to survive an accidental encounter with a sink, the phone also has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. And despite all of that, Samsung has kept the device relatively slim at 7.4mm thick and 193 grams.
How much does it cost?
The Galaxy S26 FE starts at $699.99 and comes in Pistachio, Blueberry, and Graphite. There are 128GB and 256GB storage options.
Select carriers will begin offering it on September 3, followed by wider availability through Samsung, carriers, and retailers on September 4.
That puts the S26 FE in an interesting spot where Samsung seems to be betting on a clear pitch. You get the Galaxy camera experience, increasingly capable AI, a big 120Hz screen, and seven years of updates without buying the most expensive Galaxy in the room. Through all the features it boasts, that seven-year promise might end up being the one people appreciate most once the novelty of having a brand-new phone wears off.
