Qualcomm is looking to make cars of the future even smarter with the unveiling of its third generation Snapdragon Automotive Cockpit Platform.

Built on the same Snapdragon 820A as previous editions, this most recent generation boasts a number of improvements to its AI engine and computer vision capabilities.

Qualcomm says its overarching goal in creating this new technology is to develop an AI-centric platform that makes building high-res graphics-based experiences such as navigation, voice/gesture-control systems, and other similar infotainment systems easier.

The newly improved platform comes in three tiers, from the entry-level “Performance” tier to the high-end “Paramount” tier.

And though the platform includes the Qualcomm Hexagon and Vision – systems known for their advanced machine learning and computer vision capabilities, the company says this platform is solely for developing in-car, not self-driving technologies.

Qualcomm says we can expect to see these chips make their way into mainstream vehicles in coming months and years.
