OnePlus devices have long been distinguished by their signature operating system, OxygenOS, which has played a crucial role in attracting customers to the brand. The clean, fast, and user-friendly interface of OxygenOS has remained a key factor in OnePlus’s market appeal.
Today OnePlus unveiled their new OxygenOS 15 which is based on Android 15. The latest iteration of OnePlus’ operating system brings several notable changes. OxygenOS 15 promises to be even faster and smoother than its predecessors – and it’s got lots of new AI tricks up its sleeve. This includes heavy integration with Google’s Gemini AI.
Over a dozen OnePlus smartphones will be receiving the OxygenOS 15 update over the course of the next few months.
Let’s break down what’s worth paying attention to in OxygenOS 15.
Performance Updates
The most significant technical improvement is the new Parallel Processing system, which aims to eliminate animation stutters when switching between apps. OnePlus claims smooth performance and animations with 20+ apps running.
Another concrete improvement is the reduction in system storage footprint – OxygenOS 15 takes up 20% less space than its predecessor, which means you’ll have about 5GB of more room for your stuff.
New AI Features
The new AI photo enhancement suite includes three main tools that could prove handy in specific situations:
AI Detail Boost attempts to upscale low-res photos to 4K quality, AI Unblur works to salvage blurry shots, and AI Reflection Eraser removes unwanted reflections from photos taken through glass. These are all useful AI photo features to have right out of the box.
The new practical Circle to Search feature lets users search for anything on screen by drawing around it. It’s a straightforward implementation that could save some time compared to copying and pasting text.
Practical Improvements
Google’s Gemini AI is now the default assistant, supporting voice interactions in over 40 languages. The system includes a new AI Notes feature that helps organize and polish written content.
Security Enhancements
OxygenOS 15 brings with it a new theft protection features that automatically lock down devices when suspicious activity is detected. OnePlus is also one of the first Android manufacturers to implement Google Play Protect Live Threat Detection.
Interface Changes
The OS is also upping its design game with visual refresh brings redesigned icons and new animation effects during charging and unlocking. Much of this design refresh has been inspired by feedback from the OnePlus user community.
OnePlus is also bringing over its Open Canvas multitasking feature, which was previously only available on its foldable – the OnePlus Open. That means users on OnePlus candy bar phones can now open two apps at the same time.
For those in the Apple ecosystem, there’s now a dedicated “Share with iPhone” feature, though it requires iPhone users to download the separate O+Connect app.
Overall, OxygenOS 15 brings some interesting additions, and we’re happy to hear that several OnePlus models will receive an update for it. However, we’re especially excited to see it running on the upcoming OnePlus 13 flagship, which is rumored to be launching sometime soon.
