Starz has revealed more details about its recently announced Outlander prequel series.
The network revealed on Thursday that the new show will be called Outlander: Blood of My Blood. When the project was first announced last February, details on what it would focus on were being kept under wraps. But in a new announcement from Starz, it was revealed that the prequel would follow the love story of Jamie Fraser’s parents.
A few weeks ahead of the prequel announcement, Diana Gabaldon ― the author of the Outlander books on which the original TV series is based ― teased in a Facebook post that she was working on a prequel novel about Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, the parents of Outlander main character, Jamie.
Gabaldon’s Outlander prequel novel will likely serve as the inspiration for Outlander: Blood of My Blood, which is being written by Matthew B. Roberts, which will also serve as showrunner and executive producer of the prequel. As Outlander fans know, Roberts also serves as showrunner and executive producer for the original series, which is currently in production on season 7.
In addition to Roberts, Maril Davis and Ronald D. Moore, who developed Outlander for TV, will also exec produce the prequel under their production banner Tall Ship Productions. Story Mining & Supply Company will also exec produce with Gabaldon serving as a consulting producer. Lastly, Sony Pictures Television will also produce the prequel, with Executive Vice President of Original Programming, Karen Bailey, overseeing the project on behalf of STARZ.
“Outlander is a riveting show that from season to season has captured the hearts of its fans around the world,” said Kathryn Busby, President, Original Programming at STARZ, in a press release. “We are excited to peel back the layers of this vibrant world to bring our audience the origin of where it all began. Matthew, Maril, and Ronald will continue to bring their excellent vision and creativity to this new iteration, and we can’t wait to see what happens next.”
