Sustainable shoe brand Cariuma has dropped its first-ever collaboration with National Geographic.
The Cariuma x National Geographic collection reimagines two of Cariuma’s best-selling sneaker styles — the OCA Low and the OCA High — to celebrate two species that are directly tied to the core of the footwear brand’s spirit.
Each pair of sneakers in the collection is emblazoned with a high-quality print of either a gecko or a turtle alongside the unmistakable logo of National Geographic. The two animals live in the places the shoe company is fighting to protect with its environmentally friendly production model and its in-house Ecological Restoration Program, which plants two trees in the Brazilian rainforest for every pair of shoes purchased.
In addition to planting two trees for every pair of Cariuma x National Geographic sneakers sold, every purchase also helps support the global nonprofit National Geographic Society in “its work to protect and illuminate our world through exploration, research, and education.”
“Now, more than ever, it’s essential to protect our planet in any way possible, taking care of the rainforest is our mission; taking care of our coastal waters is our responsibility. As lifelong surfers, skaters, and explorers, it’s our responsibility to protect our planet for the next generation,” said the footwear brand in a press release announcing the collab.
Just like Carima’s regular OCA Low and OCA High sneakers, the Cariuma x National Geographic shoes feature an organically-sourced cotton canvas upper that’s breathable and lightweight; a slip-resistant sole made from sustainably harvested sugarcane; a removable insole made from cork and mamona oil; and fully stitched outsole for extra durability. What is Cariuma?
Co-founded by boardsports (skateboarding, surfing, and snowboarding) enthusiasts David and Fernando, the Brazil-based company manufactures good-looking, crazy comfy, and consciously made sneakers to make a stand against the wasteful practices inherent in fast fashion and reinvent the sneaker game.
“We left our previous jobs with a shared idea to build a company that would better serve people and the planet,” David and Fernando said of how the shoe brand came about. “We knew the industry-standard ‘cool-classic’ sneakers were really uncomfortable and that the big corporations weren’t socially responsible and didn’t really care about sustainability in an active way. … [So] we wanted to make future classics with an increased lifespan that evolve with you and your sense of style.”
