McDonald’s is stirring up nostalgia in its U.S. drive-thrus. After several years off the menu, the beloved Chocolate Chip Frappé is back, but with a twist that’s caught some attention.

The new version, introduced to select markets, has been rebranded as the Hershey’s Chocolate Chip Frappé. It combines the classic Mocha and Caramel Frappé bases with coffee flavor and adds Hershey’s chocolate chips, both in the mix and sprinkled on top of the whipped cream.

Why the Hershey’s tie-in? McDonald’s hasn’t officially explained, but the addition of name-brand chocolate seems to be a crowd-pleaser. A Redditor summed it up: “The chocolate chips are better because they’re name brand.

There’s a catch, though. The Hershey’s Chocolate Chip Frappé isn’t available everywhere. Individual stores appear to decide whether to offer it, so before you head out, you might want to check the McDonald’s app or call your local restaurant.

For some, this exclusivity adds to the appeal. After all, McDonald’s international fans have long boasted about unique regional menu items, and now U.S. fans finally have something rare to chase down. This “treasure hunt” marketing approach has already proven effective, with participating locations reporting increased foot traffic and higher average check sizes since the drink’s quiet rollout.

The limited release strategy appears to be part of McDonald’s new approach to menu innovation this year. To that effect, the company has been strategically reintroducing fan favorites with premium partnerships to boost sales during traditionally slower periods.
