Pouring yourself a bowl of your favorite childhood cereal is usually one of the little pleasures you look forward to when you start your day. For those in the U.K., that feeling is about to change, and the change depends on how you like your Rice Krispies. According to reports, breakfast giant Kellogg’s has officially stopped using actual rice grains in UK batches of Rice Krispies and Coco Pops, swapping them out due to unpredictable climate shifts.
Why the recipe had to change
So, what prompted such a drastic makeover? According to Kellogg’s, severe dry weather and climate disruptions in key Asian rice-producing countries have heavily damaged harvests and driven up prices. Because the world’s rice supply has been squeezed by droughts, floods and intense heatwaves tied to El Niño, maintaining the old recipe became a challenge.
To keep the cereal flowing without sacrificing consistency, the brand is replacing traditional rice grains with corn flour and rice flour instead. While the classic crunch is staying put, the recipe shift means UK packaging will now feature a brand-new “contains wheat gluten” warning.
What stays the same in your bowl
Before anyone panics about losing their favorite morning ritual, Kellogg’s assures cereal fans that everything else in the bowl remains structurally intact. Another noteworthy point is that the nutritional benefits—including fiber, iron and vitamin D—are sticking around, and the cereals continue to meet strict UK food standards for fat, salt and sugar.
What this means for consumers in the US and Canada
The good news is that for those who happen to live in the US or Canada, your boxes are staying completely untouched. North American production will continue using real rice with zero recipe changes.
