The Continental trailer

Released on Wednesday, April 12th, the teaser opens with panoramic shots of 1970s New York, where one of the locations of The Continental hotel chain can be found. The video then brings us inside the hotel, showing a man checking in at the lobby with a gold coin and a bloodied shirt being openly put on a laundry cart.

While there are people partying in one area of the hotel, there are some chasing, shootouts, martial arts face-offs, and explosions going on in other parts of the establishment. The action-packed teaser also gives fans their first look at the different characters of the TV series, including a masked woman and a katana-wielding man. The video ends with the show’s main protagonist, young Winston Scott (Colin Woodell), arriving at the entrance of the hotel.

What is the John Wick TV series about?

A prequel to the John Wick films, The Continental will explore the origin story of the iconic hotel-for-assassins centerpiece of the John Wick universe through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott, as he’s dragged into the Hell-scape of 1970s New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the hotel’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the hotel where he will eventually take his future throne. The TV series will also tackle real-world events, including the Great Garbage Strike and the American Mafia’s rise to economic power.

In 2021, Kevin Beggs, chairman of Lionsgate Television which produces The Continental, shared that the TV series had been difficult to develop, with the studio having taken various pitches from different creative teams, before ultimately moving forward with the concept presented by the creators of the YouTube Original series, Wayne.

The Continental cast

In addition to Colin Woodell starring as young Winston (the role that was originated by Ian McShane in the John Wick films), The Continental’s ensemble cast also includes Mel Gibson as Cormac, Hubert Point-Du Jour as Miles, Jessica Allain as Lou, Mishel Prada as KD, Nhung Kate as Yen, Ben Robson as Frankie, Peter Greene as Uncle Charlie, Ayomide Adegun as Charon, Jeremy Bobb as Mayhew, Katie McGrath as The Adjudicator, Ray McKinnon as Jenkins, Adam Shapiro as Lemmy, Mark Musashi as Hansel, and Marina Mazepa as Gretel.

It’s not clear whether or not John Wick (Keanu Reeves) will appear in The Continental. But back in 2017, when the TV series was first announced, several news outlets reported that Reeves was expected to guest star in the show. That, however, was way before it was revealed that the TV show would be a prequel. While it’s still possible for Reeves to pop up in the TV series, there’s also a chance that the TV show will feature a young John Wick played by a younger actor.

How many episodes does The Continental have?

Billed as a miniseries, The Continental only has three episodes. The first and third episode was directed by Albert Hughes, while the second episode was helmed by Charlotte Brandstrom. The episodes were co-written by Greg Coolidge, Kirk Ward, Shawn Simmons, and  Ken Kristensen.

The Continental release date

The TV series The Continental doesn’t have an exact release date yet, but the teaser for the TV series confirms that it will premiere in September 2023.

Where can I watch The Continental series?

In the United States, The Continental will debut on the Peacock streaming service. The TV series was originally set for Starz, but in 2022, it was announced that it would be moving to Peacock, which also acquired the rights to the John Wick movies.

Outside of the U.S., The Continental will stream on Amazon Prime Video except in Israel and the Middle East.
