Ted Lasso closed its third-season run on May 31st, 2023, and while it’s not yet clear whether or not the sports dramedy series is coming back for another season, there are reports that the show could continue in a potential female-focused Ted Lasso spinoff.

What is the potential female-focused Ted Lasso spinoff?

In an interview with Deadline after the season 3 finale, Juno Temple, who plays Keeley Jones in the series, was asked what she feels about a potential AFC Richmond women’s team spinoff. The actress didn’t confirm whether such a Ted Lasso spinoff is in the works, but her answer to the question seems to suggest that she’s down for it.

Temple talked about the great friendship that has developed between her character and Hannah Waddingham’s Rebecca Welton and went on to say that she would like to see more women lifting each other up on the small screen.

“Just that final moment to have it be with Keeley and Rebecca, that to me was something that was so important because that relationship on and off camera has been something that has changed my life forever for the better,” said Temple. “I also think it has created such an amazing conversation about how female friendships need to be viewed in this industry as extraordinarily important, powerful, brilliant, and uncompetitive, just loving relationships. And that’s been something that I couldn’t be more proud to be part of. I get to see that with Hannah [Waddingham], who’s one of the greatest women I’ve ever met in my life.”

When Deadline commented that it’s exciting to see what Keeley and Rebecca could do for women’s sports, Temple explained why it’s important to see healthy female friendships on TV.

“They want to help women believe in themselves because they’ve done that for each other, and they know how good that feels and how much strength it gives you,” Temple said of Keeley and Rebecca. “Even when you take a knock, you’ve got somebody that can help support you. She had this moment, Keeley, this season when she doesn’t quite know what to do when she’s really vulnerable with a piece of her past being exposed. The person she goes to is Rebecca and Rebecca’s advice is so brilliant. That’s the way their friendship works, right? It’s down to the real, raw, honest parts of who they are.”

Temple continued, “I think it would be amazing to see how they would continue to do wonderful things together and also how that then would bleed out into other women passing that on to other women. something that was really amazing to watch, how that team has grown into such an extraordinary family.”

Is Ted Lasso coming back?

Ted Lasso has not been canceled or renewed for a season 4 yet, but there are a number of things that suggest that the show will continue without the titular character.

Back in 2021, series co-creator Jason Sudeikis, who also plays the title character, said that Ted Lasso would end after three seasons. But in March 2023, ahead of the show’s season 3 premiere, Sudeikis teased that the season might not be the end for the series. He confirmed to Deadline that season three marks the end of the story he wanted to tell. He, however, pointed out that the last season “set the table for all sorts of folks … to get to watch the further telling of these stories.”

A day before the season 3 finale, the official Twitter account of the show shared a David Lynch–referencing tweet, suggesting that the show or at least some of the stories it introduced are not yet over.

“I can’t tell you what’s happenin’, but I sure as heck don’t want it to end,” read a part of the tweet, which has led some fans to believe that one chapter of the show is ending, but another one is about to start in the future.

Moreover, even though the season 3 finale neatly resolved the storylines involving Ted, Rebecca, Nate Shelley (Nick Mohammed), Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt), Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh), Shandy Fine (Ambreen Razia), Zava (Maximilian Osinski), and more, there are still a number of dangling questions.

For instance, will AFC Richmond get another chance to win the Premier League title after finishing the season in second place? Will Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) or Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) end up with Keeley, or did they ruin their chances with her permanently by fighting over her? These questions are still up there and could be answered in a new season of Ted Lasso or a Ted Lasso spinoff series.
