If you’ve ever opened a box of Cheerios a week later and found the cereal gone soft because someone didn’t roll the bag down, General Mills is trying to fix that.

The company just put out a new kind of Cheerios box with a Ziploc bag inside. It’s called Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal, and you zip it shut after you pour, just like you would a sandwich bag.

There’s one small twist, however. The bag only opens partway across the top to create a pour spout before zipping completely shut, and General Mills says that should mean less cereal ending up on the counter.

Right now you’ll only find it online at Walmart.com, which started selling it on Oct. 27. Retailers and grocery stores are supposed to get it over the next few months. It’s also only on original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios for now, and the old-style bags aren’t going anywhere yet.

General Mills has been fielding requests for a better cereal packaging solution for years, with the Cheerios and Ziploc brands collectively hearing from hundreds of thousands of consumers each year about how to keep their cereal fresh. A December 2025 survey from market research and insight firm Suzy found that 90% of cereal eaters use something, whether it’s clips, clothespins, or a plastic tub, to keep their cereal from going stale.

“Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal takes a small, everyday cereal frustration and finally gives consumers the simple solution they’ve been asking for,” said Emilie Knox, who runs the Cheerios business at General Mills, in a statement.
