What is Bark Air?

Bark Air is the world’s first airline designed specifically for dogs of all sizes and breeds! Launched in May 2024, it offers a luxurious and stress-free travel experience for canine companions.

Created by the pet company Bark, Bark Air is not exactly a traditional airline since it doesn’t own its own fleet of airplanes. To deliver its first-class service exclusive for dogs, Bark Air is partnering with Talon Air, a private jet charter company that flies Gulfstream G500 jets.

What makes Bark Air unique?

Here are the key factors that set Bark Air apart from airlines that offer pet-friendly flights:

Focus on Dog Comfort

Traditional airlines primarily focus on human comfort, with pet policies designed for accommodation rather than enjoyment. Bark Air flips the script, prioritizing dog comfort with spacious cabins for playtime and socialization – features that are absent on most pet-friendly flights.

Luxury Experience

Bark Air elevates pet travel from basic transportation to a luxurious experience. Think in-flight doggy menus, noise-canceling headphones, and even on-board “spas”. Traditional airlines rarely offer such pampering amenities for pets.

Personalized Care

Bark Air goes beyond simply allowing pets on board. It provides dedicated staff to ensure your pup feels safe and happy throughout the journey. This personalized attention is a stark contrast to the limited interaction pets typically receive on standard flights.

No Crates

Bark Air eliminates the stress of flying in a crate, a common requirement for pets on traditional airlines. This allows dogs to move around freely and reduces anxiety associated with confined spaces.

Price

It’s important to note that Bark Air comes at a premium price point. While some airlines may charge pet fees, Bark Air’s luxurious service and focus on dog comfort are reflected in a significantly higher cost.

Can you fly with your dog on a Bark Air flight?

While Bark Air is an airline for dogs, pup owners can fly with their furry companion on any Bark Air flight.  Each dog ticket comes with a pass for one human, aged 18 years old and up. Additional passes are available for purchase.

What flight routes does Bark Air offer?

Bark Air is a relatively new airline and their flight options are still expanding.  Currently, they offer routes between New York and Los Angeles, and New York and London. Bark Air’s launch routes serve the New York City metro area via White Plains (HPN), Los Angeles via Van Nuys (VNY), and London via Biggin Hill (BQN).

With their recent success, Bark Air is planning to add more destinations in the future, including:

  • Paris
  • Texas
  • Colorado
  • Florida
  • Brazil

As mentioned above, Bark Air is actually a private charter service, so it doesn’t publish flight schedules in the traditional sense. However, you can visit its website or contact the company directly to inquire about available flights and pricing for your pup’s next adventure.

What are the documentation requirements to fly with Bank Air?

Dogs are required to have up-to-date vaccination records to fly with Bank Air. The Bark Air Concierge will contact pup owners after booking to gather details about their pet’s size, allergies, and socialization preferences.

For human companions, a state-issued ID is required for local flights. International destinations, on the other hand, require documents certifying rabies vaccination records and microchip compliance. When flying to the United Kingdom, the country requires proof of tapeworm treatment before taking off.

When was Bark Air’s inaugural flight?

Bark Air’s inaugural flight took place on Thursday, May 23, 2024. It flew from New York to Los Angeles and was a sold-out success!

Bark Air planes are designed to fit 15 dogs and their humans, but only 10 2-in-1 tickets are sold to ensure that the pups have ample room to play.

How much are Bark Air flights?

Bark Air flights are currently on the expensive side:

  • One-way flights from New York to Los Angeles or vice versa start at $6,000.
  • One-way flights from New York to London or vice versa start at $8,000.

This price includes a passage for one dog and one human companion. There’s room for additional dogs under 50 lbs together for the same price, but additional humans would likely cost extra.

According to CBS News, Bark Air’s executives acknowledged that the prices are “cost-prohibitive for most families,” but said they expect the flights to get cheaper as demand increases.

“Televisions, telephones, VCRs and DVD players, to automobiles, train and boat travel, and, yes, even human air travel—all of these started with very high prices until demand was proven and the costs could be brought lower by serving the masses,” wrote Matt Meeker, Bark’s chief executive officer and co-founder, in a May letter obtained by CBS News.

How to book a flight with Bark Air

Booking a flight with Bark Air is done directly through their website [Bark Air]. Here’s a breakdown of the process:

  2. Click on the “Bookings” tab.
  3. You’ll be directed to their “Collections” page where you can choose your desired route.
  4. Select your desired route and choose between one-way or round-trip.
