Apple is once again pushing the boundaries of personal audio technology with a new version of AirPods Pro 2 that will offer clinical-grade hearing aid features. Set to be available through a simple software update, these upgrades will not only provide superior sound quality that AirPods are known for but also serve as crucial assistance for individuals seeking affordable and discreet hearing solutions. Keep reading below to learn how the new AirPods Pro 2 will make hearing health more accessible to people who struggle with hearing difficulties.

Groundbreaking Hearing Aid Features in AirPods Pro 2

Apple announced on Monday, September 9th, that its upcoming update to AirPods Pro 2 will enable clinical-grade hearing aid features aimed at assisting over 1 billion people globally.

With the highly anticipated update, AirPods Pro 2 will offer hearing aid functionality comparable to over-the-counter devices, specifically designed for individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss.

Users will be able to take a scientifically validated five-minute hearing test on their iPhone or iPad running iOS 18, which takes approximately five minutes to complete. The results, including audiograms, will be securely stored in the Health app for privacy.

After the hearing test, users’ AirPods Pro 2 will make “personalized dynamic adjustments” to enhance their auditory experience. Sounds will be adjusted to prescribed levels in real time to improve listening in various environments.

Enhanced Connectivity and Engagement

The personalized hearing profile generated by the test will also inform how the AirPods Pro 2’s hearing aid feature adjusts sounds in real-time, including phone calls, music, and other media. This feature will help users better engage in conversations and stay connected to their surroundings.

“This helps them better engage in conversation, and keeps them connected to the people and environment around them,” Apple said.

Passive Noise Reduction for Hearing Protection

In addition to the hearing aid capabilities, the AirPods Pro 2, once updated, will also include a passive noise-reduction feature that automatically dampens ambient loud noises while retaining audio integrity. This feature will be particularly useful in noisy environments, such as live concerts, to prevent further hearing damage.
