Aldi is already the 3rd largest grocery store chain in the country and now it’s doubling down on expanding its footprint.
The discount grocery chain announced plans to open 800 new stores across the U.S. by the end of 2028. The rollout includes 225 new locations by 2025 alone, boosting its total store count to more than 3,200 nationwide. Aldi is positioning itself as an increasingly accessible option for shoppers looking to stretch their budgets without sacrificing quality.
For New Jersey residents, the news comes with particular interest. While the Garden State already has a number of Aldi locations, the current distribution still leaves gaps. In towns like Bayville or Beachwood, for example, a simple Aldi run can mean a 30-minute drive to places like Forked River, Brick, or Toms River—especially when traffic is factored in.
The Aldi expansion reflects a broader trend: discount grocery stores are gaining ground, especially as shoppers contend with higher prices at the checkout. Aldi, much like its competitors Lidl, keeps costs down with a no-frills shopping model, offering store-brand products, minimal staffing, and simplified layouts. The savings often get passed directly to consumers.
Right now, “Aldi is the 3rd largest grocery store chain in the country,” the original report noted, and it’s clear the brand aims to grow that lead.
Unfortunately, no specific store openings have been confirmed yet for New Jersey, but with hundreds of new locations coming, the odds are good that some of them will land in underserved parts of the state. Until then, fans of the chain will have to keep making the trip or hold out hope that their town is next on Aldi’s expansion map.
