Domino’s is handing out up to $1 million worth of free personal pizzas this summer, betting its new pie belongs among fast food’s most iconic items, and the catch is a strange one.
You have to spend money at a competitor to qualify, though the fine print legally obliges the pizza giant to offer a ‘no purchase necessary’ loophole for those willing to dig through the terms.
The promotion runs from August 31st to September 30th through IsTheDominoWorthy.com and requires patrons to buy one of five specific fast-food items and upload the receipt for that purchase to the website.
Domino’s will then email back a code for a free personal pizza on a first-come, first-served basis, and only while supplies last, with at least 105,375 codes available.
The Detroit-style debut
It isn’t just McDonald’s customers getting in on the action, though. The five qualifying items, aside from McDonald’s Big Mac, are Burger King’s Whopper, Taco Bell’s Crunchwrap Supreme, Chick-fil-A’s Chicken Sandwich, and Chipotle’s burrito.
All of which is a fairly bold way to say you think your new product belongs in that company.
“We think it has what it takes to become an iconic menu item, and we want customers to try and decide for themselves,” said Kate Trumbull, Domino’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer, in a statement.
The product in question is called the Domino, the company’s namesake, and it launched on August 31. The pizza is a Detroit-style personal one cut into two slices and shaped like the chain’s logo.
The dough, baked in a rectangular pan, is handmade, butter-flavored, encrusted with parmesan, and features two layers of cheese, sauce, up to three toppings, and garlic seasoning on top. It’s the first personal pizza Domino’s has ever put on its menu.
