If you have ever watched one person stand in a Disney queue while the rest of their group magically appears 30 minutes later, then you know how frustrating that can be. Now, Disney World is testing a new way to shut that down. At EPCOT’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind,’ Disney spent the past week testing a new queue rule requiring entire groups to stay together at certain checkpoints. This way, you can’t have one person hold the spot while everyone else catches up later.
The test has now wrapped up, and Disney confirmed to Mickey Visit that it isn’t a permanent rule yet. But considering how many queue experiments Cosmic Rewind has gone through lately, it could return.
No more ‘we’re together’ meetups
Cosmic Rewind has a famously winding queue. Before getting anywhere near the ride vehicle, guests move through multiple rooms, two preshow scenes, a long hallway and a ramp. During the latest test, cast members were stationed at checkpoints to tell guests that everyone in their party needed to be together before continuing farther into the queue. One checkpoint was placed as guests entered the main building from outside. Another cast member reinforced the rule farther inside, just before the exhibit section of the queue.
The goal is to stop people from using the queue as a group reservation system. Disney has also suggested the new checkpoints could make it harder for guests to claim they are simply “meeting up” with their group when they are actually skipping ahead.
An exception here is bathroom breaks. Guests who leave the line to use the restroom can still reconnect with their party.
Cosmic Rewind has become Disney’s queue-testing laboratory
This is not the first time Disney has tried to tame the Cosmic Rewind queue. Earlier this year, the ride’s operations team tested different ways to control crowds in one of its preshow rooms. Guests had developed a habit of gathering near the doorways so they could rush into the next section as soon as the doors opened.
The result was more of a human traffic jam as opposed to an orderly line. Disney briefly divided the room into sections and released guests in groups. More recently, it blocked the middle of three doorways and added more structured traffic lanes. Stanchions now help keep those lanes organized, while cast members use glow wands to keep people moving in the right direction.
Disney also recently changed the ride’s first preshow video. The update removed a pause that had apparently become an invitation for guests to shout some decidedly non-family-friendly remarks.
The rule could get tricky for some guests
There is one wrinkle in the new plan. It could affect guests who were denied Disney’s Disability Access Service (DAS) but were told by cast members that a family member could wait in the regular queue and the guest could join them later.
Disney significantly changed DAS in 2024 to address what it described as overuse and misuse of the system. Those changes made some guests who previously qualified ineligible. If the new queue rule returns permanently, situations involving accessibility accommodations may need to be handled individually.
It’s just a test for now
Disney confirmed that the latest Cosmic Rewind queue procedure was a temporary test. With ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind – Holiday Remix’ returning from November 25, 2026, through January 6, 2027, the park will have plenty of holiday crowds to put its queue experiments to the test.
If it does become a permanent park-wide policy, remember not to send one person ahead to save the squad a spot.
