Once again, Burger King Japan is selling a hamburger patty on its own, with no bun and nothing else on the plate.
The menu item is called On the Beef. It was previously available in 2025, and now, for a limited time it has returned. It’s a beef patty seasoned with salt and pepper, sold for 450 yen, or about $2.85. It doesn’t come with lettuce or cheese, and the basic version doesn’t even include ketchup.
The patty isn’t a premium one made just for this menu. Burger King uses the same beef it puts in its sandwiches, and the chain has said On the Beef is meant to give customers a chance to taste that patty by itself.
Customers who want sauce can order the Sauce on the Beef for 550 yen and choose between spicy tomato jalapeno, smokey barbecue and teriyaki. Burger King also sells the Beef on the Beef, which has two patties, for 900 yen, while two patties with sauce cost 1,000 yen as the Sauce on the Double Beef.
The idea is less unusual in Japan than it would be in the U.S. Hamburger steaks are a popular meal there and are usually eaten with rice and vegetables, in bento lunches or on top of curry. Many grocery stores sell them ready to eat. Since Burger King doesn’t offer rice or curry, though, anyone who wants a full meal will need to make the sides themselves.
Price-wise, On the Beef costs more than Burger King Japan’s 360-yen cheeseburger. It appears to use the same patty as the Whopper, however, and a Whopper starts at 690 yen.
On the Beef will be on sale until October 22. Customers who order it also get a free sticker while supplies last.
