KFC China is now selling a sandwich built around Oreo cookies.
The Oreo Original Recipe Chicken Burger puts a fried chicken thigh filet and lettuce under a layer of brown mashed potatoes dusted in cookie crumbles, with two Oreo-flavored buns holding it together.
The chain first announced the item on the Chinese microblogging platform Weibo.
While the collaboration is generating quite the buzz online, it looks like the promotion is China-exclusive. The company has not announced any plans to bring the item to the US or other global markets.
The launch is the latest in a series of unconventional experiments between the two brands. Earlier this month, for instance, KFC and Oreo explored the concept in reverse, unveiling fried chicken-flavored Oreo cookies, which, unfortunately for fans, were also limited to China.
KFC China’s willingness to go the bizarre route is not novel in the least, especially considering it has long operated independently from the global chain. Most of what appears on its menu never usually crosses over. Mashed potatoes, Portuguese-style egg tarts, congee (savory rice porridge), and rice bowls are pretty much staples of this localized lineup.
Oreo, meanwhile, has been going strong with its collaboration strategy. The cookie brand recently released Post Malone-themed cookies that combine salted caramel and shortbread creme between a chocolate wafer and a golden one, Nintendo’s Super Mario edition stamped with character designs, and a limited 1,000-pack hybrid with Ritz crackers.
KFC is yet to publish a price or an end date for what can only be described as a particularly unusual sandwich that we may never even get a whiff of unless one of us decides to hop over to the other side.
