Have you ever reached into your pocket while trying to pay for groceries, pulled out your phone or smartwatch, ready to tap and be on your merry way, only to be struck by the painful realization that this is Walmart?

For years, stepping into a Walmart or Sam’s Club felt like stepping into a strange alternate universe where tap-to-pay simply didn’t exist.
While literally every other store let you pay with a flick of your wrist or a tap of your phone, Walmart stubbornly held out.

Well, fellow tech lovers and lazy shoppers, the nightmare is officially ending. Walmart is finally fixing its biggest checkout complaint by rolling out tap-to-pay functionality.

The long-awaited upgrade is here

Walmart recently announced that contactless payments are officially arriving at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations starting August 24. If your local store isn’t in the initial launch wave, don’t panic just yet. The company plans to bring tap-to-pay to all U.S. Walmart and Sam’s Club stores by the end of 2026. And for those who love grabbing a quick tank of gas on their way out, tap-to-pay is scheduled to hit their fuel stations by mid-2027.

What this means is that you’ll finally be able to tap your physical contactless credit or debit card, your smartphone, or your smartwatch right at the register to buy your groceries, tech gear, and late-night snacks. Shoppers will also be able to load their eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club, and OnePay cards directly into their digital wallets for extra convenience.

What took so long?

For the longest time, Walmart aggressively pushed its own QR-code-based solution, Walmart Pay, requiring customers to open the store’s dedicated app just to scan a screen and complete a purchase. While Walmart Pay certainly has its fans, and isn’t going anywhere, it was always an unnecessary extra step for anyone who just wanted to double-click their Apple Watch or use Android’s native wallet.

Thankfully, Walmart realized that shoppers want choices, not extra hurdles. Tap-to-pay won’t replace existing payment methods either. You can still pay with good old-fashioned cash, swipe or insert a traditional card, or stick with Walmart Pay and Sam’s Club’s handy Scan & Go feature.

A win for convenience

Maybe you forgot your wallet in the car. Or maybe you hate pulling out your physical cards or just love the pure speed of modern digital wallets. You may even be one of those whose chip never works in Walmart’s terminals.

Regardless of your reasons for wanting the tap-to-pay option or where you stand on this new development, one thing we can all agree on is that this fix is a huge win for everyday shoppers.
As Walmart stated in a press release announcing the news, “It all comes back to giving customers and members more choice and making everyday shopping a little easier.”
