Every year, the mobile phone industry tries to sell us the exact same mid-range fantasy: top-tier cameras and pro gaming performance for a fraction of the cost of a flagship. And every year, anyone like us who tests phones has to step in and remind everyone that budget silicon margins always come with compromises.
With the Poco X8, Xiaomi took an entirely refreshing approach. Instead of chasing benchmark glory at the expense of everything else, this phone doubles down on two real-world priorities – a gorgeous, punchy display and a battery life so absurdly massive that charger anxiety feels like an obsolete concept.
So while the Poco X8 won’t isn’t the right fit for every buyer out there, it gets the everyday essentials for most buyers shockingly right.
Built to last
The first thing you notice picking up the Poco X8 is its unique styling, especially its industrial mech-inspired design which is available in orange, black and white.
Packing an 8,340 mAh battery into a handheld chassis isn’t something you can hide. While Poco distributed the weight across the frame far better than typical battery bricks, you will feel this phone in your hand. If you prefer ultra-slim devices that vanish into tailored pockets, the Poco X8 will feel like carrying a polished tile.
Where Poco deserves extra praise is durability. It carries an IP68/IP69K rating, delivering water and high-pressure steam resistance that is quite unusual in this price bracket. If you travel constantly or work outdoors, that peace of mind is worth far more than gimmicky software tricks or even a faster processor. Subtle rear curves also take the bite out of holding a wide phone during long sessions.
A brilliant display
The 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED panel is a genuinely stunning display for this class. It is crisp, vivid, and serves up deep contrast that makes streaming video on a long flight an absolute treat.
Outdoor brightness punches through direct sunlight without forcing you to squint, and the 120Hz refresh rate keeps scrolling slick. Coupled with punchy dual stereo speakers, it easily outclasses typical budget media slabs.
Solid, but not stellar performance
Under the hood sits Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6s Gen 4. So let’s be clear – this isn’t a stealth gaming flagship or even a contender to one.
For day-to-day multitasking—bouncing between Gmail, TikTok, and a dozen browser tabs – the Poco X8 runs generally cleanly without choking. However, pushing demanding 3D gaming titles requires lowering graphic presets, and heavy camera HDR processing occasionally stutters. If you treat the Poco X8 more like a marathon runner rather than a drag racer, you won’t be disappointed.
Exceptional battery life
The 8,340 mAh battery completely rewires how you interact with your phone.
Where typical 5,000 mAh devices barely limp past bedtime, the Poco X8 routinely ended 14-hour days of heavy streaming, and even hotspot tethering with over 50% remaining. For moderate users, this stretches to a true 2-day device. When its battery finally runs out, fast wired charging gets it back on its feet.
Optics and Software
The camera setup is practical, led by a capable 50MP primary sensor. Daylight shots turn out sharp and rich with pleasing dynamic range. Low-light images, however, pick up noticeable luminance noise, and the selfie lens tends to warm up skin tones under artificial lighting. Video capture also remains basic and limited to 30fps at 1080p, and lacking the high-end stabilization creators would need.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi’s HyperOS remains a mixed bag. The UI is snappy and custom lock screens look great, but it arrives loaded with pre-installed bloatware and pushy prompts you’ll probably pend your first half-hour disabling. Budget buyers deserve clean software out of the box, too.
Bottom line
The Poco X8 succeeds because it doesn’t pretend to be an iPhone Pro or a flagship Android. You trade away competitive mobile gaming and cinematic video capture. In return, you get a stellar display, extreme IP69K water and dust resistance, and battery endurance that flattens virtually every rival on the shelf. If you want a dependable, road-ready workhorse that refuses to die before bedtime, the Poco X8 is an easy choice.
