Oreo China has dropped a limited-edition fried-chicken-flavored cookie in partnership with KFC — and it’s straight-up bizarre.

It looks like a normal Oreo from the outside, because the wafers are the same chocolate ones. The difference sits in the middle, where the sweet creme has been replaced with a filling meant to taste like KFC’s Original Recipe, an 11-herb-and-spice blend, seasoning, and salt and all (minus the meat, of course!).

The cookie went on sale in China on July 31 as part of Oreo’s limited-edition “Playful Time Travel” collection.

Unboxing the crossover

The crossover is impossible to miss, even before opening the box. The packaging is red and white, as opposed to Oreo’s familiar dark blue color, featuring prominent imagery of fried chicken next to a stack of cookies.

Inside, the branding continues, with one wafer of each cookie carrying KFC’s logo where the Oreo mark usually goes. The collection also includes a Retro Popcorn flavor, which can be bought separately in an 87g box or together in a 174g bundle.

The pair are both listed on the Chinese e-commerce platform JD. There has been no official word on a wider release, meaning that for now anyone outside China wanting to find out what fried chicken dunked in milk tastes like might have to bank on a third-party importer.

KFC and Oreo have been doing this sort of “pick your favorite polarizing flavor” experiment for a while now. KFC, for instance, turned its gravy into ice cream last year with Hackney Gelato and more recently released a Simpsons menu featuring a donut burger and a Squishee-inspired drink.

Oreo’s back catalog is arguably even more chaotic.

For this year’s April Fools’ Day, the cookie brand sold real dill pickle cookies following a previous Thanksgiving tin that came packed with Cranberry Sauce, Pumpkin Pie, Turkey & Stuffing, Creamed Corn, Sweet Potato, and Caramel Apple Pie flavors.
