After more than three decades, one of McDonald’s most beloved treats is making an unexpected return—and longtime fans are already buzzing with nostalgia. The fast-food giant is bringing back its iconic Fried Apple Pie for a limited time, reviving the crispy dessert many thought was gone for good. But why is the classic pastry returning now, and where can customers get their hands on it? Here’s everything to know about the comeback that has dessert lovers eager for another bite.

A nostalgic favorite returns to the menu

McDonald’s is turning back the clock this summer with the return of one of its most beloved desserts. Beginning June 23, the fast-food chain will once again offer the original Fried Apple Pie at participating restaurants across the United States for a limited time.

Announced on June 16, the comeback marks the first nationwide return of the dessert in more than three decades. The seasonal release also comes as the country prepares to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary next year, with McDonald’s positioning the pie as a celebration of nostalgia and summertime traditions.

The fast-food giant, which processes roughly 170 million domestically sourced apples every single year across its U.S. stores, ensures that the returning pie will utilize the exact 100% American-grown apple filling that defined the original.

From a family recipe to a McDonald’s staple

Long before it became a global phenomenon, the iconic pocket dessert was nothing more than an intimate family recipe. In the 1960s, Litton Cochran, a McDonald’s owner and operator in East Tennessee, developed a unique fried apple hand pie that quickly became a runaway hit with local customers. When franchise founder Ray Kroc began searching for a signature dessert to anchor the brand’s expanding menu, Cochran knew exactly what to suggest.

“There are certain things that just take you back – and the Fried Apple Pie is one of them. It’s something that people love and remember from growing up,” said Eric Cochran, a current McDonald’s owner-operator and Litton’s grandson. “When Ray Kroc was trying to come up with a dessert for McDonald’s, my Grandad, Litton Cochran, suggested a Fried Apple Pie as a classic that people would love. My Grandmom, Jo Cochran, spent months perfecting the recipe. Bringing the Fried Apple Pie back for fans this summer to celebrate America’s 250th just feels right.”

The final iteration — a rectangular, vented pastry served in a protective cardboard sleeve — made its official nationwide debut in 1968.

Why the original Fried Apple Pie disappeared

For nearly a quarter of a century, the deep-fried pastry reigned supreme. However, its nationwide run abruptly ended in 1992. Spurred by evolving consumer nutrition trends and the release of the USDA’s inaugural Food Guide Pyramid, McDonald’s systematically overhauled its deep-fried menu items in favor of healthier alternatives. The original fried method was abandoned across the continental U.S., replaced by the modern, oven-baked Apple Pie.

While the baked version became a permanent fixture, purists never quite forgot the original. Interestingly, according to nutritional data from the company’s website, the current baked apple pie clocks in at 230 calories, which is actually 10 more calories than its deep-fried predecessor. Though the fried variant remained an elusive specialty in select international markets like the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Australia, U.S. fans were left relying on nostalgic memories, until now.

A larger-than-life tribute along Route 66

To ensure this culinary comeback is impossible to miss, the Golden Arches are taking the celebration directly to the pavement of America’s most historic highway. A massive, 35-foot-tall replica of the Fried Apple Pie is being constructed along Route 66 in Joliet, Illinois — just a short distance from McDonald’s corporate headquarters in Chicago. Standing roughly as high as a three-story house, this giant pastry monument is designed to be the ultimate nostalgic roadside photo-op.

Travelers and fast-food enthusiasts looking to take the long way home can map out their trip around the following schedule:

  • The Grand Kickoff (June 23): The towering monument will officially debut to the public from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. CT. Visitors who stop by the Joliet site (located at 920 N. Broadway St.) can enjoy live music, ice-cold Coca-Cola, and complimentary Arch Cards while grabbing a custom McDonald’s souvenir road map.
  • The Independence Day Stretch (June 23 – July 4): The 35-foot sculpture will remain standing through the July 4th holiday, serving as a beacon for summer road-trippers before it is disassembled.

Whether you choose to make the pilgrimage to Route 66 or simply pull into your neighborhood drive-thru, the original Fried Apple Pie will be available on the all-day menu and via the McDonald’s App starting June 23, strictly while supplies last.
