While much of the streaming industry has spent 2026 making digital entertainment more expensive, Roku is heading in the exact opposite direction. Since January, the platform has quietly added 79 free channels to its lineup, offering a massive influx of content without asking for a dime.

The aggressive expansion rolled out through The Roku Channel, the platform’s dedicated, free ad-supported streaming hub.

The best part? Users don’t need an additional subscription or login to access the new content – they simply open The Roku Channel and head straight to the Live TV section. The obvious catch here is ads. But for viewers actively looking to cut monthly costs, sitting through a few commercials is a much easier pill to swallow than taking on another monthly bill.

A Ballooning Channel Lineup

Roku started 2026 with a baseline of over 350 free channels, but it has stacked its lineup month over month since the new year began.

January kicked things off with six new channels, including Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and My Wife & Kids. February followed close behind with 17 additions, bringing heavy hitters like CNN Express, Johnny Carson TV, Murder, She Wrote, Lassie, and Stargate by MGM to the platform.

However, March proved to be the strongest month of the first quarter. Roku leaned heavily into recognizable, comfort-watch brands, adding channels entirely dedicated to:

  • The National Geographic Hub: Featuring Nat Geo Animals, Nat Geo History, and Nat Geo Travel.
  • Reality & Competition: Hell’s Kitchen, Survivor, The Amazing Race, and Family Feud.
  • Fandom & Sports: A 24/7 Pokémon channel and MotoGP.

Something for Everyone (and the World Cup)

What especially makes Roku’s 2026 expansion so compelling is its sheer variety. Instead of just dumping generic movie bundles, the platform has carefully balanced sports, news, reality TV, nature documentaries, kids’ programming, and international content.

The momentum didn’t slow down in the spring, either. April alone brought 22 new channels, while May added another 15. Some of the most notable recent arrivals include:

  • Sports Illustrated TV
  • America’s Got Talent
  • Nomad Travel
  • Modern Wisdom
  • Alaska State Troopers
  • Live PD: Greatest Shifts

Roku is also timing its drops to major global events. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup rapidly approaching, the platform recently launched dedicated FIFA and sports-focused channels to capture soccer fans looking for free coverage.

As subscription prices keep climbing across Netflix, Disney+, Max, Hulu, Peacock, and Paramount+, consumer fatigue has officially reached a boiling point. If you are willing to sit through a few ad breaks to avoid another hit to your bank account, Roku’s rapidly growing free ecosystem might just be the lifesaver your budget needs.
