PlayStation Plus is getting more expensive for new subscribers, as Sony prepares to raise prices on select subscription plans later this month. The changes affect the service’s monthly and three-month membership options, continuing a broader trend of rising costs across gaming and entertainment subscriptions.

This price increase comes just a few weeks after Sony raised the price of the PS5 console. The updated pricing takes effect on May 20, giving players only a short window to subscribe or renew before the increases begin rolling out.

Monthly and Quarterly Plans Are Going Up

Under the new pricing structure, the standard PlayStation Plus Essential plan will increase to:

  • $10.99 per month
  • $27.99 for three months

That marks a price increase for shorter-term subscription options, particularly affecting players who prefer month-to-month flexibility instead of paying annually. At the moment, Sony does not appear to be changing pricing for the annual subscription plan, which may encourage more users to shift toward longer-term memberships.

Current PlayStation Subscribers Mostly Avoid the Increase

The price hike is mainly targeting new subscribers, according to Sony’s current rollout plans. Existing subscribers in most regions will not immediately see the new pricing unless their subscription expires, changes tiers, or lapses entirely. That means many current users may be able to keep their existing pricing for now as long as their subscription remains active.

The increase comes at a time when subscription services across gaming, streaming, and entertainment are becoming more expensive. Over the past few years, PlayStation Plus has expanded significantly, adding more monthly games and a larger Game Catalog experience through higher subscription tiers.

Maintaining those growing libraries and services has likely increased operating costs behind the scenes. The gaming industry has also been dealing with broader economic pressure, including rising technology, infrastructure, and content costs.

Another Sign of Subscription Fatigue

The latest PlayStation Plus increase adds to a growing list of subscription price hikes across the gaming industry, where companies are balancing rising operational costs with expanding digital services.

For PlayStation players who pay monthly, the change may not seem massive at first glance. But it reflects a larger trend where gaming subscriptions continue to steadily climb in price year after year.

Anyone considering a new PlayStation Plus subscription may want to lock in pricing before the updated rates officially take effect on May 20.
