Fans of the Netflix rom-com Emily in Paris have been captivated by the will-they-won’t-they romance between Emily Cooper, played by Lily Collins, and chef Gabriel, played by Lucas Bravo. But recent hints from Bravo himself suggest that this love story could be coming to an end. In an interview, Bravo has expressed frustration with his character’s development and the show’s direction anew, hinting at a potential departure from the show. So, is Gabriel ultimately bidding farewell to Emily when Emily in Paris returns for its fifth season?
Lucas Bravo Voices Frustrations Over Gabriel’s Arc in Emily in Paris
In a recent interview with French publication Le Figaro’s TV magazine, Lucas Bravo voiced his dissatisfaction with the current direction of Gabriel’s storyline in Emily in Paris. Bravo, 36, criticized the lack of communication in Gabriel’s relationship with Emily, saying, “Everything is based on a lack of communication.” He suggested that Gabriel would benefit from developing “a bit of panache” in future episodes.
Describing the communication between Gabriel and Emily as “archaic,” Bravo noted that today’s generation values open dialogue and confrontation, suggesting that his character could benefit from a more assertive and proactive approach. “People see this mechanism coming from miles away, and I don’t want to be part of a cog that underestimates the audience’s intelligence,” he told the magazine.

Bravo hinted that his participation in the show’s upcoming fifth season, part of which is set to be filmed in Rome, remains uncertain. “Life is short,” he shared. “It takes five months to shoot this series. Do I want to spend that time on a story that doesn’t stimulate me?”
This isn’t the first time Bravo has expressed disappointment on Gabriel’s evolving storyline. In September, the actor admitted that he had grown disillusioned by his character and the direction the show was taking. “I don’t really like what it’s becoming and where this storyline is going,” he said. “You know, at the end of the day, I’m just an actor, and I’m here to say my lines, but, yeah, it’s kind of weird.”
“I don’t understand him anymore,” he added of Gabriel. “But we’ll see… [series creator] Darren [Star] has plans. I’m just following it.”
Lucas Bravo Finds Freedom in New Roles Outside Emily in Paris
Since making his debut in Emily in Paris, Lucas Bravo has expanded his acting portfolio with notable roles. In 2022, he appeared in Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris alongside Lesley Manville, Isabelle Huppert, and Jason Isaacs, as well as in Ticket to Paradise with Julia Roberts and George Clooney.
Next on his agenda is the French biopic Libre. Chronicling the life of infamous robber Bruno Sulak, known for his spectacular prison escapes, the movie will be released on Amazon Prime Video next month. Bravo has also secured a role in the upcoming British thriller Turn Up the Sun! starring James McAvoy and Aisling Franciosi.
Bravo suggests that these diverse roles provide him with the creative freedom that Emily in Paris perhaps lacks. Although he described the series as “good entertainment, an escape,” the actor expressed a desire to engage in more meaningful storytelling: “I don’t really have any freedom [in Emily in Paris] and as people are starting to give it to me elsewhere, I am getting a taste for it.”
Despite his growing interest in other projects, Bravo recognizes the impact of Emily in Paris on his career. In fact, last August, Bravo told The Independent that he appreciates the show’s evolution into a more nuanced and mature series, particularly in its later seasons.
“If season 1 was birth, season 2 was childhood and season 3 was being a teenager, season 4 is about growing into adult life,” he said. “It was more interesting to shoot. It felt more substantial, a bit more nuanced.”
When will Emily in Paris season 5 come out?
