For years, ride-sharing apps have transformed the way we travel, but for many seniors, tiny fonts and complicated menus have kept that convenience just out of reach. Now, Uber is closing the gap. With its new senior-friendly app featuring larger fonts and a simplified design, Uber is making it easier than ever for older adults to book rides with confidence. Keep reading to learn more about this thoughtful update.

Uber’s Simplified App for Seniors Goes National

Just a month after testing a simplified version of its app designed for older adults, Uber is now bringing the senior-friendly feature to users across the U.S., the company announced Wednesday. This nationwide rollout aims to make ride-booking easier and more intuitive for seniors by introducing larger text, fewer steps, and quick access to commonly visited locations like home or medical offices.

These streamlined tools are part of Uber’s Family profile feature, allowing you to invite an older adult and select the “Senior” option. Once the invitation is accepted, their app interface will automatically switch to a more accessible design tailored to their needs.

For seniors who prefer to set it up themselves, there’s also the option to enable “Simple Mode” directly within the app. By heading to the Account tab and navigating to Settings > Accessibility > Simple Mode, users can toggle the feature on or off—no family connection required.

To invite a loved one to your Uber Family profile, tap “Account” in the bottom right of the app, then select “Family” followed by “Invite Family.” Choose “Senior,” tap “Continue,” pick a contact, and send the invitation.

Uber initially introduced its senior account option in May as part of a pilot in Phoenix and Orlando, coinciding with Lyft’s own plans to launch similar features. With the U.S. launch now underway, Uber also plans to expand senior accounts to international markets soon.

How Uber and Lyft Are Adapting to an Aging Population

As the global population ages, making technology more accessible isn’t just a convenience—it’s a necessity. For older adults, especially those who no longer drive or have mobility challenges, ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft can be a lifeline, offering vital access to healthcare, social activities, and everyday errands. However, the complexity of modern apps, with small text, cluttered menus, and multiple steps, can make these services difficult or intimidating for seniors to use.

Recognizing this challenge, both Uber and Lyft have introduced senior-focused features aimed at simplifying the ride-booking experience. These updates aren’t just thoughtful—they’re timely. According to the World Health Organization, by 2030, one in six people globally will be 60 or older. A simplified interface lowers the barrier to entry for many seniors and people with disabilities, helping them regain independence and stay connected.

In addition to streamlined designs, both companies also offer options for riders to request wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Self-driving company May Mobility, which partners with Uber and Lyft, has expanded these efforts by providing accessible rides as well. Together, these initiatives represent a broader push toward inclusive, user-friendly transportation for an aging and diverse population.
