South Korean airports have recently cracked down on an unexpected contraband: Trader Joe’s Everything but the Bagel Seasoning.

The popular condiment from Trader Joe’s known for its savory blend of sesame seeds, dried garlic, dried onion, and sea salt flakes, has found itself at the center of an international incident due to one seemingly tiny ingredient: poppy seeds.

South Korean customs officials have been confiscating the seasoning from travelers, citing the country’s strict regulations on poppy seeds.

While these seeds are a common ingredient in many Western countries, they’re a big no-no in South Korea due to their association with opium production. And it’s not because of the increased risk of getting poppy seeds stuck in one’s teeth.

This culinary clash has left many travelers scratching their heads. After all, who would have thought that a harmless sprinkle on your morning bagel could lead to such a stir? The situation has even prompted the U.S. Embassy in Seoul to issue a travel advisory, warning American citizens about the potential seizure of products containing poppy seeds.

But it’s not just South Korea who has issues with poppy seeds, they are also banned in Taiwan and Singapore, as well as Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

It’s also worth noting that back in February 2023, the United States Department of Defense website issued a warning against ingesting poppy seeds because it can result in a positive for codeine on a urine test, which could cause service members some serious career troubles.

For Trader Joe’s fans planning a trip to South Korea, this means leaving your favorite seasoning at home. But don’t worry, your bagels won’t have to go naked. Why not try experimenting with some local Korean seasonings instead? Who knows, you might discover a new favorite topping that doesn’t come with the risk of confiscation.

In the meantime, this quirky customs conundrum serves as a reminder that when it comes to international travel, it’s always best to double-check local regulations. Even the most innocuous items can sometimes lead to unexpected adventures – or in this case, unseasoned bagels.
