Total Wireless is expanding its partnership with Western Union, bringing money transfers, bill payments and money orders into participating Total Wireless stores across the U.S. Hidden in that announcement is one especially useful perk: customers on select Total Wireless plans get one Western Union transfer fee-free every month.
Yes, your wireless plan can now help you send money.
The free transfer is not for everyone
Customers on MAX 5G BYO, MAX 5G, and ALL ACCESS plans can get one Western Union transfer fee-free each month. The benefit covers the Western Union transfer fee, so it doesn’t mean every possible cost disappears. Exchange rates, taxes, and applicable surcharges can still apply.
Everyone else can still use Western Union services at participating Total Wireless stores, but they’ll pay the standard Western Union rates. So if you are already on one of the qualifying plans, this is an extra perk attached to something you’re already paying for.
Total Wireless store is becoming a mini financial-services desk
The partnership is going beyond money transfers. Participating Total Wireless stores will offer money transfers, bill pay, and money orders, with the rollout beginning at select locations and expanding to more stores through the end of 2026.
That means someone could walk into a Total Wireless store to deal with their phone service and walk out having also sent money, paid a bill, or bought a money order.
According to Total Wireless, its stores are intended to serve as community gathering places. Adding everyday financial services gives people another reason to use them beyond buying a phone or sorting out a wireless plan.
You can still send money without visiting a store
The free-transfer benefit is not locked inside a Total Wireless storefront. Eligible customers can redeem it through the Western Union website, the Western Union mobile app, or participating Total Wireless stores.
And Western Union’s network gives the service a pretty substantial reach. Transfers can be sent to more than 200 countries and territories, with more than 360,000 payout locations worldwide.
Total Wireless started this perk in June
This isn’t completely out of nowhere. Total Wireless launched its monthly fee-free money-transfer benefit in June, describing itself as the first U.S. wireless carrier to offer the perk at no additional cost.
The latest announcement expands that idea from a digital benefit into the company’s physical retail network.
‘Free’ doesn’t mean everything is free
Before you start sending money everywhere, there’s some fine print worth knowing. The monthly benefit applies once per month to eligible customers and covers the Western Union transfer fee only.
Exchange-rate differences, taxes, and other applicable charges are not necessarily covered. Customers who don’t have an eligible plan can still access the services at participating Total Wireless stores, but standard Western Union fees apply.
While you don’t get unlimited free international money movement, it is a fairly practical perk if you’re already paying for one of the qualifying Total Wireless plans. Your wireless carrier now wants to help you call people, text people, stream stuff, and apparently send them money, too.
