A popular frozen meal is being pulled from store shelves. The recall affects over 57,000 units, and consumers are advised to check their freezers. Read on to see if your burrito bowls are impacted and what steps to take to stay safe.

Undeclared allergen prompts nationwide burrito bowl recall

One Frozen, based in Rochester, New York, has voluntarily recalled certain batches of its Good & Gather™ Southwest-Style Burrito Bowl Blend (12 oz frozen bags) due to the possible presence of shrimp (crustacean shellfish) not listed on the ingredient label. Individuals with shellfish allergies or severe sensitivities could be at risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product.

The recall, announced on Wednesday, September 10, affects burrito bowls sold through Target stores nationwide, reaching all 50 states. A total of 57,240 units were distributed to consumers, with distribution beginning on April 17.

This action follows three consumer complaints reporting the potential presence of shrimp. As of the announcement date, no illnesses have been reported. The recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to protect consumer safety.

Understanding shellfish allergies and their risks

Shellfish allergies are an immune system reaction that occurs when the body mistakenly identifies proteins found in shellfish—such as shrimp, crab, lobster, or crayfish—as harmful. When someone with a shellfish allergy consumes these proteins, their immune system releases chemicals like histamine, triggering allergic symptoms.

Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include:

  • Hives or itchy skin
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Respiratory problems such as wheezing, coughing, or shortness of breath
  • Dizziness, fainting, or a rapid heartbeat

In severe cases, shellfish allergies can lead to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction that can cause airway constriction, a sudden drop in blood pressure, and shock. Anaphylaxis requires immediate emergency treatment, often with an epinephrine injection.

Because even trace amounts of shellfish can trigger a reaction, people with this allergy must carefully read labels and avoid any products that may contain shellfish. It is also recommended that individuals who have been exposed or experience any signs of an allergic reaction seek medical care immediately.
