After a year of job cuts and corporate belt-tightening, Target is still planting flags in new markets. The retail chain is moving ahead with plans to open about 30 new stores, including one in Seneca, South Carolina.
Company listings show the new store planned for 1810 Sandifer Blvd. will sit inside the Thornwell Village retail center along Highway 123.
Why this location matters
The Oconee Economic Alliance said last year the project is expected to bring more than 300 jobs to the area, with total investment nearing $150 million. Other retailers and restaurants are also expected to move into the development.
Construction is already underway. Local station WYFF News 4 flew over the site recently and captured footage showing steady progress on the building.
Where else they’re popping up
Target’s website also lists new stores planned across North Carolina, including Fayetteville, Fuquay-Varina, Mebane, Myrtle Grove, and Selma. The company says it plans to open about 300 new stores nationwide over the next decade.
The expansion comes a few months after Target announced layoffs affecting roughly 1,000 employees and eliminated about 800 open positions. The chain framed those cuts as part of an effort to stabilize operations following weaker sales and internal restructuring.
For Seneca, the focus is on what’s coming next: a new Target, a growing retail center, and hundreds of new jobs tied to the project.
