After six years of testing a mobile-order-focused concept, Starbucks is pulling the plug on its “Pickup” locations. The company confirmed it will close or convert all 80–90 of its pickup-only stores across more than 20 U.S. states by 2026.

These locations were designed with speed in mind, which meant no seats, no counters, just a fast lane for grabbing your coffee and leaving. First launched in New York in 2019, the format expanded into downtowns, hospital lobbies, and airport terminals. Now it’s being phased out.

Starbucks leadership says the model doesn’t align with their vision for the brand. While the idea of skipping the line was appealing, it came at the cost of what they see as the company’s core strength: face-to-face connection. The decision marks a strategic shift as Starbucks doubles down on community-driven stores and re-centers its focus on traditional coffeehouses.

Despite the closures, Starbucks isn’t backing away from mobile ordering. In fact, digital orders now account for over 30% of all transactions. The company plans to continue enhancing its mobile experience, just within more conventional stores.

The change will affect dozens of locations, including stores in Manhattan, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Houston. Some sites will shut down entirely, while others may be reimagined into standard formats.

If you’ve ever grabbed a latte from a little storefront with no seating and minimal signage, chances are you’ve visited one of these soon-to-be-retired pickup stores. By 2026, they’ll be a thing of the past.
