After a decade hiatus, it looks like Star Trek is finally returning to the big screen. At CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas, Paramount Skydance confirmed that a new feature film is officially in development., even as the franchise’s television side begins to wind down.
Before you get too excited for a reunion with the Chris Pine crew, let’s set the record straight – this isn’t the long-delayed Star Trek 4. That Kelvin-timeline project has officially dropped. Instead, fans can expect a fresh start with an entirely new cast and a story that’s separate from the timeline that’s been in limbo for years.
For those who need a refresher, the “Kelvin” timeline refers to the alternate universe J.J. Abrams created in 2009. It allowed the movies to exist without being tethered to the 60 years of original TV canon. By moving away from it now, Paramount is signaling a total creative reset.
The new film project is in the hands of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. They’re the duo behind Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. They are set to write, direct, and produce. While details are still light, we know that the film won’t rely on legacy callbacks or prior continuity. It’s a bold move, especially considering it’s currently the only Trek project greenlit since the Paramount-Skydance merger closed back in early 2026.
This news comes at a turbulent time for the Star Trek universe. With Starfleet Academy ending after two seasons and Strange New Worlds wrapping up after its fifth, the TV era of Star Trek feels like it’s reaching a potential end. For the first time in nearly a decade, no Trek series is currently in active production.
While I’m always a bit skeptical of film pitches until the cameras are actually rolling, this is a much-needed announcement for Trekkies. Let’s just hope this one actually makes it out of spacedock.
