Pizza Hut has rolled out one of its strangest and most interesting experiments yet, and Americans are stuck watching from the sidelines.
Only available in Brunei, the newly released Coffee Pizza, officially dubbed “Kopi-zza,” blends Pizza Hut’s usual cheesy base with the aroma and flavor of coffee, creating a bold, sweet-savory combo that feels more like a dare than a safe new topping.
It was supposed to be a short run, just two weeks, but demand was strong enough that Pizza Hut Brunei decided to extend its availability.
Brunei, a small nation on the island of Borneo between Malaysia and the South China Sea, is already pretty familiar with coffee culture. “Kopi” means coffee in Malay, and here it’s being taken literally — straight onto the pizza.
It’s not the first time the sovereign state has been used as a testing ground for bolder ideas. In September, Pizza Hut Brunei launched a limited-edition Matcha Cheese Stuffed-Crust Pizza, which grabbed plenty of attention on social media and among locals.
For now, both Kopi-zza and the previous matcha experiment are staying put in Brunei. Anyone in the U.S. curious enough to try coffee on their slice will have to keep waiting — or book a flight.
Global Experiments: Pizza Hut’s Test Kitchen
The Kopi-zza is just the latest in a global pattern of wild experimentation from the chain. In China, Pizza Hut introduced the highly controversial “Goblin Pizza,” which featured a whole deep-fried bullfrog on top of a spicy mala-flavored (mala is a spicy Szechuan peppercorn seasoning) base.
A year prior, Japan debuted the Shoyu Ramen Pizza, combining a soy sauce-infused tonkotsu base and springy ramen noodles with chashu pork—a dish one reviewer described as resembling “a bowl of ramen spilled onto a pizza crust.”
The chain’s testing has even stretched beyond food. Pizza Hut collaborated with a Kansas-based winery to release a limited-edition, tomato-based “pizza wine,” a unique blend infused with natural basil and herbs designed to complement the flavor of a perfectly baked slice.
