OURA Air face mask kills bacteria and viruses with self-sterilizing technology

Antimicrobial agents are embedded into every thread of the mask’s medical-grade fabrics

All face masks are not created equal. While all types of face coverings are believed to help curb the spread of COVID-19, they do not offer the same level of protection to people. Typically, the pricier the face mask, the higher level of protection it provides. And if you’re one of those who don’t mind spending extra money on face masks, one of the face coverings you should seriously consider using is the OURA Air Mask.

Made by Orange County, California-based company Oura ― which specializes in sustainable, top-of-the-line aprons, hats, and clothes ― the OURA Air Mask features self-sterilizing technology that doesn’t just filter out germs, but kills them. The company use molecular level infusion to permanently embed antimicrobial compounds like silver oxide and titanium dioxide into every thread of the mask’s medical-grade fabrics. These compounds kill bacteria, inactivate viral particles, and breaks down odor-causing molecules.

To ensure proper filtration, the OURA Air Mask underwent independent testing by a leading third-party laboratory. And according to the results, the face mask achieved filtration greater than 95% for both bacteria and viruses even without an N95 filter. But if you want additional filtration, an optional N95 filter is available for purchase with the mask.

The outer layer of the mask is water repellent, resisting penetration from sprays, sneezes, and coughs. The mask’s innermost layer, meanwhile, is made with skin-friendly fabrics for even the most sensitive skin types. Although the mask offers a high level of filtration, its advanced textiles make the mask remain breathable and moisture-wicking. The reusable and washable face mask also offers UPF 50+ protection from UVA and UVB rays.

We’ve been wear-testing the OURA Air Mask for several days now and we’re very impressed by how breathable and well made it is. It’s also super comfortable to wear – just make sure to get the correct size for your face. It’s worth noting that it doesn’t fog up glasses. Its design is minimalist and modern, which we appreciate too. Is it a pricey face mask? Yes. But we’d say you’re getting what you’re paying for!

Priced at $50, the OURA Air Mask is available in four sizes (extra small, small, medium, and large) and 10 different colors (black, teal, sage, coffee, blue, pink, frost, crimson, cayenne, lilac). Each mask comes with its own self-sterilizing travel pouch so you can store your mask away when it’s not in use. The mask also has a smaller version particularly designed for kids. Called Oura Air Mask Jr., these kids’ face coverings retail for $25 each.

At the end of the day, no matter how costly it is, no mask can completely protect you from COVID-19. But an antimicrobial mask that is fitted well and has a high filtration efficiency like the Oura Air Mask can potentially reduce your risk of infection, especially when combined with practices like hand-washing and social distancing.
