A hotel Wi-Fi connection may seem like a harmless convenience, but Microsoft says it could become the first step in a devastating cyberattack. The tech giant is warning travelers about a sophisticated hacking campaign that targets hotel internet networks to steal passwords, compromise sensitive accounts, and infect devices without victims realizing it. As more people rely on public Wi-Fi while traveling, understanding how these attacks work — and the simple steps that can help you avoid them — could make all the difference.

Silent hijackers in the lobby

The threat stems from an internet hijacking scheme dubbed “CaptiveCrunch.” According to an advisory published by Microsoft Threat Intelligence, the operation is orchestrated by a Russian state-sponsored hacking unit tracked as Storm-2945. Researchers link this team directly to Midnight Blizzard — a high-profile cyber-espionage group also known as APT29 or Cozy Bear, which is affiliated with Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service.

Microsoft first detected the group executing a “widespread compromise of Wi-Fi networks at hospitality-related organizations” back in May, though the company declined to comment on why it waited three months to officially issue a public disclosure.

Unlike broad, indiscriminate scams, these attacks are described as “widespread but targeted.” The hackers infiltrate the public Wi-Fi networks and guest login gateways — known as captive portals — frequently used by hotels, conference centers, and airports around the globe.

How the hotel Wi-Fi attack works

When guests attempt to join a compromised hotel network, the hackers intercept the connection. Instead of routing the traveler straight to the internet, the hijacked system prompts the user to download a file or log in through an altered gateway.

Once a traveler unwittingly downloads the malicious payload, the consequences are severe. The malware grants attackers complete, remote command over the infected device. From there, foreign operatives can quietly extract stored browser cookies, saved passwords, and sensitive personal files. Worse still, the software enables covert surveillance, allowing attackers to:

  • Record keystrokes and take screen grabs.
  • Capture live audio and video through the device’s microphone and camera.
  • Monitor clipboard data (such as copied passwords or credit card numbers).
  • Gain full control of Microsoft 365 accounts, handing them the keys to a target’s emails and personal cloud storage on OneDrive.

Hackers disguise malware as trusted software updates

To make the infection look legitimate, the hackers deploy convincing, official-looking pop-ups that imitate standard system maintenance screens. Microsoft warns that these deceptive windows are specifically crafted to lower a user’s guard by mimicking routine updates or connectivity troubleshooting.

Travelers logging into infected hotel networks may encounter fake prompts such as:

  • “winupdate”: A convincing screen reading: “Working on updates… Don’t turn off your computer.”
  • “defender”: A fake Windows Security screen claiming to run a virus scan.
  • “netfix”: A pop-up posing as an official Windows Network Diagnostics tool.
  • “browser” & “pdfview”: Disguised software installers claiming to update your browser or PDF reader.
  • Fake Security Checks: Search engine screens imitating Google system checks that claim: “Our systems have detected unusual traffic from your computer network. Please complete the security check to access Google Search.”

Because these prompts appear during the familiar process of connecting to hotel Wi-Fi, even tech-savvy travelers can be tricked into authorizing the download.

How to outsmart the hackers

While public Wi-Fi remains a convenient amenity, cybersecurity experts stress that zero-trust habits are now essential when traveling. Microsoft recommends taking several proactive steps to shield your devices and personal data from network hijackers:

  1. Bypass public networks entirely: Whenever possible, avoid guest Wi-Fi at hotels, airports, and venues. Opt instead for a secure cellular connection, such as a personal mobile hotspot from your smartphone.
  2. Refuse unexpected download prompts: Never install software updates, system patches, browser tools, or security certificates that pop up while attempting to connect to a public gateway. Legitimate Wi-Fi portals will rarely require you to download new software just to browse the web.
  3. Tighten corporate travel protocols: Businesses are urged to restrict the amount of sensitive corporate credentials employees enter into guest login forms while staying at hospitality venues.

By staying vigilant and recognizing the signs of an intercepted connection, travelers can keep their credentials secure, and ensure their business or vacation doesn’t end with a compromised digital identity.
